big question on?

Post by NICO »

so i am putting dohc head on the ej22block.

question is, the hole in the middle of the ej22t block, it connects the vavle cover nipples on the left side and right side of the motor in stock sohc ej22t.

its a vacume, pcv, breather, one of the 3, now when i put my dohc heads on there is only one nipple on the vavle cover left and right do i just cap this middle hole off in the ej22t block? or should i connect it to the vavle covers?

what should i do? do the heads move more air and they dont need it connected?

We don't know exactly why it's there?

If you have the means, I would say to add a new 1/2" hose nipple to each valve cover and mimic the stock setup.

I did notice on some photos that one of the EJ22T valve covers has two nipples. how does the PVC system hook up. Maybe that's there because it was difficult to route the hoses any other way on the stock turbo configuration? As long as both valve covers are monifolded together somehow and both are routed to a constant vacuum source you should be ok. I can't think of a reason why there would be three.

does it go left VC - right VC -> intake? Where does the crank case PCV come into play?

if its on the valve covers doesnt that mean its those crankcase breathers? y dont u just put filters on those and call it a day? those arent PCV lines right? the PCV lines is the "F" looking piece by the turbo and has its own hookup into the intake.

does only our block have this extra hole in the middle? could it be made for extra air to get out becuse its turbocharged and has sohc heads on?

when ever i see a jdm motor i all ways look for this hole in the block, i have never ever seen a single motor have one.

what do all the speed shops that take our block do? they put dohc heads on and sell them to pepole? do they fill the holes up weld them shut?

what i was thinking is the hole in the middle of
the block hook it up to the vavle covers that way i dont get oil in the turbo at all, and its still breathing?

even the ej20g closed deack block dont have the hole.

no, that would be a bad idea.... there's a recent thread on PCV system and breathers... read it to find out why.

You'll want to connect that addition PCV vent in the center of the block. It doesn't need to go to the valve covers. Looks like Subaru was just using that long pipe as a manifold to equalize the crankcase pressure. If you have the crankcase vent and both valve cover vents and the rear crank case vent going to a common manifold and pull on it with vacuum it will be just fine.

sammydafish is that why they put them on the valve cover so if it does spit oil it just spits it in the valve cover? also is this hole getting sucked air out or in? or both?

should i put this hole in line with the crank case vent and then put a f tube where the stock pipes go?

or tee of the only nipples i have on the valve covers and make it work like that?

as long as you supply vacuum to all the crankcase vents (two crankcase, and both valve covers) then you will be fine. The valve covers are baffeled so they won't draw up liquid oil, the vent at the rear of the crancase is too. I'm not sure about the one in the front (center) it might not be because of both packaging issues and the way that it was vented to both valve covers in the factory configuration. Because of this you'll want to make sure you run a decent size hose to that vent and using a catch can would probably not be a bad idea.

ok i asked my dad, he siad plug it. his explination is, our sohc head dont flow alot of air. he also siad there is one hole in the back thats all you need for the block to vent.

could he be right? do our stock heads flow bad? we are the only blocks that have this center hole vent (what ever the hell it is). this is the only thing that has me at a stand still on this dohc swap?

He says they don't flow a lot of air in what way?

While you might be okay capping it off, why not just add a couple more 1/2" bungs to the valve covers so you can do it how it was stock?

vrg3 i have no clue what he ment, i told him to weld on a new nipple and he siad NO.

i am going to ask him what he means about the flow.

i think he is going to say the heads are to small in all ways for this motor.

I just finished putting DOHC heads on an EJ22t in my touring wagon. I capped that vent. The car runs fine.

It really looks like, from the diagram, the forward nipples on both crankcase and valve covers are for equalizing pressure, since they only connect to each other.....

Just my take on it.

napphappy so you did it and it runs perfect good to now, thats what i did. hope it works out as well for me also.

IronMonkeyL255 it must be just for that, my dad siad it helps to breath cuz the heads are small.

2nd motor is done with the heads on, just got to get this ferrari out of the dame garage to put my car in and slap this monster in. stupid italian cars all ways in my way around my house (drive the dame car in the winter) LOL

my 14year old ej22t motor is blowing up agian, please let it be a head gasket or vavle.

i got crazy head gaskets comeing in for both my blocks i use. there also getting forged pistons, no more fucking around this time on blowing this blowing that.

^^i got no money my dads cutomers do and lots of it.

ok i am starting to think my dad did my center middle nipple wrong.

right now its L vc R vc in a tee then he joined the center nipple in that right to the turbo.

when you look in the valve cover on the stock ej22t, they have special baffles for the nipples that get hooked up to the turbo.

on the other hand the nipple that gets hooked up to the center nipple is a open nipple right in the vc. the way i see it the center nipple could suck huge amounts of oil or spits lots of oil.

sould i cap it?
sould i open air it + with a catch can?

my ej22t feels like it has a pluged or runing nose. dont get me wrong its a bullet. but it feels pluged.

Im not sure what "right now its L vc R vc in a tee then he joined the center nipple in that right to the turbo." means but....
If you are going to use the center nipple, hook it up like it is stock.(i.e. tap two new holes in the valve coversand keep it seperate from the pcv system) Dont connect it to the pre-turbo intake, (the spot where the other breathers are plumbed to)
The center nipple is not baffled. Where the three used for the pcv are.

Thats the way I see it anyway

^^ i was meaning left vavle cover right vavle cover, are hooked up in the center. then there is a tee that hooks up the center nipple to the center where the two valve covers meet. then they go in a catch can, then in to the turbo.

ok i did a experiment to day and drove all day 10 psi to 14 psi, with just the center nipple open air. no oil spit out at all i even did 240kms run and no oil spit out.

is it ok to just leave it open air?
