If you're going to drop the crossmember too, you'd be best off dropping the tranny with it all. Drop the engine/trans/crossmember as one unit.

Special instructions:
Be sure to pre-soak the crap out of the tie rod ends with PB blaster. Drop the x-member with the steering rack attached. Be sure to mark the splines alignment on the U-join for the rack to the steering wheel. Do the same with the ball joints on the control arms. They can be a total bitch.
It takes some muscle to flex the control arms clear of the x-member to get it to drop. It really helps to have two guys on it, with one on each side doing the same thing at the same time. That is unless you are installing an ALK, then you can just remove the 2 rear control arm mounting bolts and drop them along with the x-member...
When the engine to tranny guide pins stick from rust, which they most likely will, get under it from the bottom and pry it from the gap between the tranny and engine. Once you get it "cracked" use a pair of pry bars on each side of the top of the engine to pull it out evenly and straight from the guide pins.
And it is really key to make sure the tranny is jacked up enough to get a good clean pull on the engine. Make sure your direction of pull is in alignment with the angle of the tranny, so again, you pull it off straight...

Don't touch the steering column. And use whichever steering rack has fewer miles on it. They are identical...
