HVAC controls with separate AC/Recirc buttons?

Post by thefultonhow »

So one of the many things I liked better on my G20 than on this car (and on my dad's 2001 Forester, for that matter) is that you could switch recirc and AC on and off independently of each other and the other settings on the climate control unit. On the Legacy, the only time recirc is on is when you're on Max AC, and you can't, say, have bilev and AC running at the same time.

Is there any way to change this around either by getting a climate control panel from another country, by modifying the functions of the existing buttons, or by adding extra switches on the dashboard?

You could probably rig up some extra switches. I don't know if this would 100% work as I haven't looked at the wiring diagrams, but I think it probably would.

Okay, it looks like basically every country except the US and Canada got a control panel that has separate AC and recirc buttons. Does anybody know if they're pin-compatible with the USDM harnesses, and if it's possible to special-order one at the dealership? (Subyluvr2112, I'm looking at you...)

Any pictures of that version? I'm not having any luck finding them, and it sounds like a nice mod to have.

Here are a couple of really sucky ones (and both RHD):

I found a pic that suggests they're available in LHD versions too... but it doesn't have the whole panel visible. I'd like to know what that small button in the first picture is.

Would it really matter if it was RHD or LHD? I would think the harness would be the same either way.

Well, I took mine out today to take a look. The problem would be the cable that controls the temperature -- it reaches down into the footwell and is pretty short. I doubt it would reach from the left side to the right side like it would have to.

True, I hadn't thought about that, but I bet you could replace it with something longer.

I asked one of our European members to take a picture of his HVAC controls, and he was happy to oblige:

Hmm... I think I would like the operation of what I have better than that one, except for the separate AC/recirc. I like the buttons. I wonder what the possibilities of the other one are. And I want to know what that extra little button is. :)

Update from the thread; this is a 2.2 GX control panel. Give it to me.

There isn't a USDM GX model.

Don't know about the recirc thing, but I wanted to have un airconditioned
air flowing up through the defroster onto the windsceen.

Spliced a kill toggle switch to the compressor--the option is g00d. :)

Yes there is :). It's a 94 "specialty" wagon. I even have the SOA part number for the 2.2GX badge.

Okay, I've run into a snag on the EDM climate control -- AC was an option on most EDM BC/BFs, so most of the control panels don't have an AC button.

Having Recirc for all settings is the most important thing to me -- so I want to install a toggle in the height-adjustment-switch blank on the dash. Does anybody know which wires I should splice into, or do I have to do the R&D myself on this?

I've done a little homework, but I need help figuring out which wires I should splice into. I have a chart for you to look at, courtesy of my Haynes manual:

Image

You'll notice in the ON/RECIRC position there's a resistor or something, but it seems like that's only if I also want the AC to be on, right? Also, I assume that line means that pins 9 and 14 would be connected. Do I need to interrupt the circuit between 9 and 13 as well, or would it automatically be interrupted when Recirc isn't selected? How would I interrupt it with a toggle switch if I had to? Or would I have to switch between shorting 9/13 and 9/14?

So many questions!

Nobody has any input?

How about I ask another question --

Will an SPDT switch do the trick? Because that's what i bought. My idea is to switch between connecting 9 and 14, and 9 and 13.

I'd really also like to know if I need that diode (not resistor)...

An SPDT switch works well, but for anyone who does this in the future (that is, if anyone does this in the future), you should use a momentary switch because the control panel resets the recirc door every time you switch modes. So whenever I switch modes, I have to flip the switch back and forth to keep it on recirc...

I've been using this for a few days and it's, well, useless. The recirc door keeps on cycling and so I don't get any benefits from the switch. So...

That's Alvaro Alonso's AC panel. He lives in Spain and has been getting EDM glass headlights for forum members. He can get a couple of panels just like that one, so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in one. The cost is 130 euros each plus shipping if he gets two, but is 180 euros for just one, hence why i'm asking. Does anyone want to get the second one?
