Help me get rid of weight off my 92 SS

Post by Judge Smails »

my 92 SS weighs 3100 lbs stock. Is there any way i can get to around 2300lbs? I figure i have to gut the whole car, and i have heard that you can swap to a impreza body shell? What do i need to go to accomplish my goal?

If it's a daily driver.... and you want to keep all the functional type items, then I don't really even seeing dropping the weight by more then 100-200 lbs MAX.

As a daily driver I would recommend keeping the spare tire, but you could dump that, the tray, and the stuff in the trunk, but you'll probably get 50 lbs.

IMO there's just not much to get rid of if you want to keep the car a daily driver.

What are you willing to lose? Does it have a sunroof? The sunroof motor/controls and all that bracketry weight quite a bit.

You could also look into stationary seatbelts rather than the electric ones, there are potential weight savings there to that wont compromise comfort.

It all depends how comfortable you want to be, you could strip out everything but a bucket to sit on and it'd still be your daily driver... Like Legacy777 says, you can't lose much with a daily driver, since a lot of the weight reduction comes from the rear seats and upholstery on the inside.

we pulled the carpet, the rear trunk carpet and trim, the spare tire, the jack, the utility tray, the passenger seat, the rear seats, the rear seat belts and all the associated bolts, the rear door cards, and the rear package tray.

i think we dropped 150 pounds.

it all depends on how much comfort you want to retain and how much money you have to spend.

you could have custom carbon fiber fenders and hood made.

swap in a non sunroof roof panel.

get a custom CF rear decklid. maybe some CF door skins?

i think you would have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to get a 90-94 AWD turbo legacy below 2700 pounds.

Add Braille racing battery -11lbs. Works year round in Seattle weather. Lots of cranking power...Aftermarket seats and rails weight much less also...

Remove carpet in the trunk...jack...swap power antenna for stationary unit...the back bench comes out with two bolts take it out when you're not hauling folks...Good luck! I deleted my AC rather than repairing it - also swapped the bracket holding alternator from the cast iron one that holds the ac compressor and alt to the alloy one that just holds the alt. Good luck!!
