engine/ecu

Post by asc_up »

as of right now, my plan is to put the ej20g in my car.

first question is.....why the ej20g instead of the ej20k?
everyone says the ej20g....why?

second.....should i use an ej20g ecu and wiring harness or find an ej22t ecu and wiring harness and customize it to work?

Using the 20g ecu and wiring harness would be easier. That way you don't have to mess with the 22t ecu running the coil on plug setup.

The Ej20K is the next generation of EJ20 and it uses the 3 plug ECU. You can use it, but it complicates things quite a bit. There is no simple "plug in the ECU to your connectors" approach to it...

I personally wanted the under manifold inlet plumbing and larger intercooler of the Ej20K. So, I bought 2 complete swaps and stole those parts off the Ej20K, and installed them on the EJ20G. But I am still using the Ej20G ECU and igntion system, at least for now...

i think i'm gonna be getting that engine within the next few weeks.

so besides the engine, i know i'll need to get a turbo legacy front cross member and a hood with a hoodscoop. what downpipe will i need? are there any other parts that i will need.

You don't have to have the hoodscoop unless you want a top mount intercooler. I run my EJ22T without the scoop and with no problem...besides I prefer the no scoop look. While you're at it I would upgrade to STI motor mounts. Also you will need the up pipe with the down pipe.

If she's a 5SP I would upgrade the clutch and PP while you are at it.

I assume you can use the same boost sensors as the EJ22T uses as well. These are all mounted to the strut tower.

Get an RS pressure plate and a Kennedy 6 puck. It will hold the power and is easy to drive.

Didn't you break your transmission with the six puck?

I ordered a sprung six puck ACT today for about 129 shipped.

What is involved with converting a wastespark to coil on plug? I know you need the coil on plugs. Can the original Igniter still be used?

No, I broke 2nd gear by misshifting at 65000000 rpm from 1st to 2nd and then letting out the clutch at that rpm at full boost with it not all the way in 2nd scooting into a huge line of non-stopping traffic and this I hear a bad noise and it wouldn't go away and then I fixed it and then i didnt want to end this sentence so i kept on typing until it was time to walk the dog.....

I personally think that pucked clutches on our trannies are just asking for trouble. I run a stock clutch disc with an ACT upgraded pressure plate.

You can use any Ej series downpipe, but with the caveat that if you use a WRX one, a custom midpipe will need to be made. In fact, since the car is an NA Legacy, a custom midpipe will be needed anyways.

As for an uppipe, generally these imported longlbocks come complete with exhaust manifold, uppipe and turbo, so that is not a concern.

There are really 3 ways to convert to coil on plug.
#1 use 2 stock 2 channel ignitors
#2 use an SVX 6 channel ignitor, using only 4
#3 get the Ej20G wiring with 4 channel ignitor

You also need to add the wiring into the manifold harness. I will be posting some picutres in the next week or so showing this. It will be far less confusing to people than me verbally trying to lay it out there...

Yeah, I'm pretty confused by it right now. There is a Apex'i Power FC on ebay that would fit a legacy but I dont know about the conversion for coil on plug.

And to complicate things even more, one could use Ej205 WRX coils with built in ignitors and do away with the 4 channel ignitor all together. One of my friends in SLC did that on his car. But as for making the COP fit into Ej22T heads, that's another thing all together. I don't know how you would make that fly. I think you really need DOHC heads for it to work...

Yeah, I was thinking of EJ20G heads for the least amount of modification to make them work on the car. Do you have any more motor mounts matt? one of mine ripped in half when the engine went WOT a while back.

What engine is the twin turbo engine? ej20? Specifically, the ones with the heads that use our cam signal?
