My boost gauge was mounted out in the total open where anyone could see it even if they were just driving by, so I bought a flat black gauge pod from Summit Racing and mounted it where it is now, down at the bottom of the A-pillar.
Pardon my craptacular pictures, I used a cheapo camera...
Looks good, i was thinking of putting mine there but i went for the "middle of tach" mount. I took a 2" dia cardboard tube, fiberglassed a single layer of mat around it to hold shape. Unraveled the tube from the inside to allow the 2 1/16" gauge to fit snug in it. Trimmed it up and made a small mdf base. Then just covered it with some extra suade i had laying around in the shop. Spent maybe 1 hour tops fabbing it and it looks nearly stock i think. I ran the vac line down through a hole in the base. I was gonna run the light wires too but got lazy.
Howdy y'all, this would be my first post..... ever.
I am a total noobie to all of this, the world of owning a cool car and wanting to make it better.
I have a long list of things I want done but I thought installing a boost gauge would be a good place to start so I could understand the performance of turbo with stock settings. Also I thought it would be an easy mod. Being very inexperienced with cars even such a simple task is proving a challenge.
I like both the pillar and middle of tach applications above, any updates as to practicality while driving? Does the gauge block the tach? Is it annoying to look into the corner of the vehicle?
Really what I am hoping to know is where is a good place to tap into 12v power for the backlight? Also, since my Autometer gauge didn't come with electrical wiring what should I use?

its pretty natural to look on the inside of the A-pillar. Obviously its more in your line of sight if its right on top of the dash in front of you, but a little obtrusive and not very slick (although it makes you look like some cool racer).
Threshold's location is pretty good, keeps it out of the way from sight so you can hide the fat you have a turbo (unless you have a body marker on it)
As far as the lighting voltage source, tap into any of the dimmer wires and it should work, I think (I believe yellow w/ blue stripe). Subaru's from this gen are strange in that they have a dimmer + and dimmer -
on my truck for A-pillar gauges I just hooked right into the output from the dimmer wheel switch, and it dims right with the rest of the dash lights.
all you need is 18 gauge wire and some scotchlocks to tap into wires, maybe some ring terminals for the screws into the backside of the gauge.

I finally got my boost gauge in after it sat on my back seat for about two weeks. Many thanks to my friend Q, I would not have been able to get the job done by myself (I like to drive but my knowledge of mechanics is basic).
The gauge is in and mechanically operational but the electrical is not quite done yet. We ran out of time, but the pod is all wired up, just needs to be spliced in to the appropriate circuit. I want it to be controlled by the switch the headlights are on. Blue/yellow right...?
It's great to have the gauge. I never had a turbo before so I am not deeply familiar with the ways that they behave. The gauge is really helpful to understand the spirit of the car.
It is funny how long things take when you are doing them for the first time, I could put a gauge in now in about 1/4 the time. But my Suby and I are much more intimate now after I undressed her
Pics to follow finishing the sparky work.
