reverse does not work

Help! Reverse gear in my 93 Legacy ( 170,000 miles, automatic trans ) will only work for a short time after the car is started. After it gets driven for awhile, reverse will not work. The forward gears work fine. The trans fluid was changed 25, 000 miles ago. I checked the fluid level today and it seemed ok, along with the color. Is it time for a new trans?

Just before my original transmission decided to only use 2 forward gears at a time, I lost reverse. I was also parked downhill at the time, so it made it real fun . About a week or two after that, it decided to only use 1st and 2nd, or 3rd and 4th at a time, and flip flopped between the two gears it felt like using. I too was at around 170,000 miles, but some dumbass kid owned the car before me, and had 4 different brand tires, each with a different amount of tread wear, so I'm sure that contributed to my problem. As for yours, I can't say if you need a new one or not, but I swapped mine out when it started the two gear crap.
