two strange instrument cluster issues

Post by know1 »

As the title states I have two strange (but not deadly) problems with my instrument cluster. One, in the morning on my way to work my E-brake light wont go off for about 20 minutes or so. I have tried engaging then releasing my E-brake again and it just wont turn off. After about 20 minutes, however, it goes off by it self and stays off for the rest of the day. Even after I stop the car and park it (in underground parking) at work and leave it for 8 hours then turn it on, the E-brake light still goes out soon as I drop my E-brake. Next morning though, it stays on again for the 20 or so minutes. I have just noticed this problem occurring recently.

The other issue that just started up today, is that my left turn signal blinks twice as fast as might right turn signal. Upon checking weather my actual turn signals do the same I have found that the front blinks twice as fast and the rear doesn't blink at all. The tail lights on that side work though, as well as the brake lights. I believe this is a very recent issue as I just had my lights checked during an oil change at Mr.Lube.

The fast blinking is because the blinker is out. It needs to be replaced.

The brake light, could be because the brake reservoir is low or the level float is sticking. That has happened to me once or twice. Just try removing the cap for the brake reservoir.

The turn signal is fact, while the brake light is conjecture. Take it for what it is.

I second IronMonkey's assessment.

Well, just got back from Lordco and buying some new bulbs. Swtched out the old bulb and installed the new and the quick turn signaling went away just as you guys said. Also, the E-brake light now goes out soon as the E-brake is depressed, I guess those are ways that your subie tells you it needs some love.

yeah, the resistance of one bulb is half as much so the remaining one blinks twice as fast. As for the brake light, as Ironmonkey said, it probably has to do with the reservoir. My light came on with a half-full reservoir (there is plenty of pad). I'm doing my brakes soon so I just topped it off and the light is gone.

Ive been having brake light problems recently, it only seems to happen in the cold even though my level is near max. I was able to get it to go away by poking the float switch during the summer but apparently the higher viscosity is enough to affect it during the winter... *shrugs*

Mine will sometimes suck the seal into the fluid. This pushes the float down and causes my light to come on. Also ruins pedal feel......
