It'd have to be a pretty nasty crash to damage this stuff...

Has anyone ever built a rollcage for their engine? :D

Im probably not going to do stage rally in it... Since its balls-out modded, it'd be open class and Im no where near ready for that.

Ill probably get a beater NA legacy to run Stage til I get a lot better, this one will be for RallyX, AutoX, Drag and such.

I know it sounds bad...but at every rally there is at least one Noob with a car that is waaaaaay too powerful, and they usually end up on the lid or kissing a tree...

In gravel rally, slow is the absolute best way to start...

NA Legacy is as fast as I would recommend to anyone starting in rally, because Matt and I have still hit 105 mph on stage in his NA rallycar...and that is pretty hair-raising!

I'd agree completly with Nick. I'm by no means an expert rally driver but I can attest to the prowess a NA Legacy, even FWD, has on the gravel. You can still really get moving and hang it out there. I grew up surrounded by back woods gravel roads and can honestly say I've pushed my old car to it's limits. Those limits can be, as Nick put it, pretty hair raising.

But the above agreement was just an agreement. We all know Splinter's got his act together :). Keep up the good work bro.

splinter cam gears! use plastic or metal ones? the ej20k came with plastic ones that i have was useing. legacy turbos came with the nice metal ones. which ones for hp an high relibility?

i have to check if there the same size to see if i could use them. or find a subaru motor that used all 4 metal ones for dohc motors.

Nico,
They switched to plastic cam gears for 2 reasons.
1. Less valvetrain inertia
2. In a wreck where the timing belt pops, the plastic gears are meant to explode and stop the rotation of the engine immediately. In many instances this has prevented valve interference and complete destruction of an engine.

Personally, I would go with what came on the engine...

They don't use metal gears anymore. JUN makes a set of adjustable ones... for $1200 per side.

Plastic cam gears are the reason for one guy who used to work at the shop's motor blowing up. Hit a deer, broke the cam gear, valve-to-valve.

I said many instances, not all. A couple years back I bought a DOHC Ej25 with popped gears from a junkyard. The car was in a front end wreck. They sold it to me as a core because they thought the valves were bent. Got it home, and put new gears and belt on it and it ran perfect...
