I've pretty much read all I care to read about swaps. I pretty much know the pros and cons of different combos.

What I want to know, from those that have experiance please, is....

Do the benefits of having a '02+ drivetrain make it worth the wiring job?

Or phrased another way...

Were you satisfied with the older engines that don't require a major rewire job?

My goal is 300 crank horsepower, reliable and daily driven. Prolly on a 2.2 or 2.35 block.

I realize that this is my choice, but I've grown to respect many of your opinions.

For that kind of goal, I really wouldn't bother with swapping in a newer motor, and going through the wiring mess.


A 2.35l stroker, IMHO, isn't worth the hassle either. Someone here in MN went through hell with his. You can buy off-the-shelf pistons and rods for the EJ22T, so why not. Your power goals do not necessitate a built bottom end. Just throw a bunch of boost at it and maybe send the cams to Delta.

Or just drop in the 2.o

It'll do 300chp no prob. Save your duckets from the OBDII swap, and buy some nice pipes and a turbo. You'd be amazed how strong the early motors are, as I sure many otheres on here can attest to.

Pick em up for around $700 t0 $500. Plug n play.

My reason for wanting a 2.2 or 2.35 is for the added torque. Not really the added strength. It is going to be a daily driver and my power goals are modest. I don't plan on doing a 4.11 or 4.44 right away so the added displacement will help with everyday drivability, AKA fun.

I already have 2 closed deck blocks. One running in the car and another on the shelf but with a large overbore from previous rebuilds. I also have a set of 2.35 CP pistons at stock size and a phase 1 2.5 crank. All I really need to get the shortblock rolling is rods. I may go with phase 2 crank/rods depending on the deal that appears.

I want DOHC heads. I am seroiusly leaning twords using period heads and intake manifold. Just seeing if anybody has that "killer" reason for updating to the new stuff.

Take a look at Legacy Max's thread and where we are going with his car. A 2.35l hybrid with DOHC heads is a very viable option and can still be run on an early 2.0l ECU if you don't go too far with it. Because we are using stock Ej20G injectors and a turbo similar in size to the turbo that is appropriate for the ECU, we don't expect major driveability issues even with the added displacement. Eventually, Max is going further with it, at which point a Perfect Power, Autronic or Link3 will come into the mix as we will need it to custom tune for boost and larger injectors...

Will build my original EJ22T block into a 2.35 then install the EG20G heads on it.

Picture isn't working, but based on other posts, I am gathering it's the Ej20G that Frantic4 was selling?

Good idea to start with it as a 2.0. That's what I am doing with my car to keep it on it's feet and work out some of the bugs. Then I can rebuild the Ej22t bottom end at my leisure and installl it later. I prefer little babay steps, though Max wanted to dive right in with the "build" on his... :twisted:

As a indutrial mechanic/troubleshooter by trade, I also prefer the "baby steps and working out the bugs at each stop" method.

As luck would have it I also scored some '05 WRX bronze rims, both Whiteline bars and a set of V7 STI wagon struts. Those, along with the engine and 5-speed conversion, should put the fun factor at the same level as my '02 WRX.

Probably beyond your WRX...honestly, I have driven WRXs, and I consider them to be pretty boring compared to my SS. :o
