I`ll be installing Borla headers on my NA 2.2 this week. Initially it`ll run
through a 2" system with the following changes made to an otherwisw stock
motor; underdrive pulley, upgraded coil, K&N filtercharger through a
modified air box (cold air from the pass side fenderwell area) and lastly a
torque chip from JC sports. All else is stock except a Dynomax muffler & the
late model cats from a `98 Impreza (needed for the collecter connection on
the header). All results (good or bad) will be posted within a week to 10
days. Optomism abounds but reality will be the final test. If it`s of any
consequence, all the changes so far have netted a noticeable difference up
to about 5500 rpm. If the headers help mid-range & upper RPMs without
killing the bottom end, I`ll be happier than a pig in poop! I`ll post
soon-Rod

what kind of coil is this? so far as i know the 2.2 is a distributorless
ignition. Can you upgrade a coil on a dist-less ignition?

There are some coil upgrades available but I think that for myself
the
coils will be one of the last mods on the engine as I have taken a
N/A
1995 engine to 8500 rpm and did not have a misfire. I would like to
see what coils could do on a dyno first. At 8500 the power fell off
and my first thought was valve float but It now turned out to be a
fuel shortage problem. Right now I am busy trying to get ready for
the
race but I plan to run a test on the coils myself soon as possible. I
have a scope card for a laptop but unfortunatly it is a ISA card and
the only laptop that it will fit is a 286 and it is having problems I
will try to get back soon.

Can you tell us how the exhaust sounds after the install? I was told that
the 'Boxer' sound was eliminated after the install and would sound more like
an H&A car. Looking at the design, it is kind of obvious though so....

Thanks

JC, and their supplier decided to return all the Borla headers since they
all looked like crap. It just seems to me that they slapped the Borla name
on a header just to say that they were the first in the US to mass produce
them.

Oh boy. At least they had the fortitude to send the silly things
back. I don't think headers, short of FHI ones, are going to do much
for this engine.

Prove me wrong, please?!

If you have $1500++ to spare, I can get you a nice header from Japan. :)

Justin Brande put one on his EJ22 from and EJ20 before he swapped the
whole thing in. He said it was noticeably better but he had to get
the x-member as well.

I don't think i'm going to worry to much about headers right now.

Borla Headers

Post by ssspoon@aol.com »

Hey Rod,

Thanks for the Borla tip
I have a whole big catalog from Borla I got some years ago
Just saw it today looking for my boost controller material
Don't remember headers for Turbo Legacys
I'll recheck right now
If nothings there maybe they caught up to me in the past several years
I'll check their website

Thanks again

Larry Witherspoon

Borla headers

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Larry-I`ll give you the specs 1st-then the other info: Pipe diam from head to 1st collector: 1.625 x 20 & 16" into a 2.25" collector to a 1.75 x 15 & 45" long pipes into a 2.25 x 3" final collector (hope this is clear.) Part # is 17183 and is listed for: `91-`00 Impreza & `00 legacy 2.5L (off road.) The primary tubes are equal but because the design is 2-into-1, then 2-into-collector (one only), they are as equal as possible for a header designed to go into a single exhaust (look on Cobb tuning`s website for a clearer picture.) The up/down pipes were fabricated on the car by McCabes Eng. (NASCAR header supplier) on the car with the N/A headers installed. Picture a short tube from the collector flange going straight up to the turbo mounted low and at an angle to the back of the pass side valve cover. Then, of course, the down pipe leading into a 2.5" hi-flow cat into the balance of the 2.25" exhaust system. It works extremely well for a street application. Borla`s original (series I) were a different design (less efficient) and the secondary tubes (leading into the collector) were much thinner than the new design. Borla stood behind their product and sent me a new set (series II) prepaid so I was`nt without my car. I`d recommend them to anyone for any reason. The second set was MUCH better & their warranty was spot-on. New info-this Thurs. I`ll be back on the dyno to: change sprayer on alcohol injection, reduce some timing and add boost to approx 10-12 lbs. We guesstimate approx. 200+ hp at the wheels. I`ll keep everyone updated.---FASTER & FURIOUSER (?)---ROD

Subject: Borla headers

Hey Rod, I was checking out your comments below;

My N/A Borla headers (2nd series) with a custom up & down pipe work extremely well with a 2.25" exhaust. If you`re talking about the MRT or STI turbo headers, I believe they are for upper-end, high-perf. motors (power from 4-8,000 rpm. A street machine may not benefit from these specialty headers but an intelligently designed system FOR THE APPLICATION should work just fine. Some people that`ll be running the 3" exhaust system are going to be miffed because the bottom end (up to 3500 rpm) will be like a WRX--too slow to spool. Except in one situation, larger is`nt always better! Be wise---ROD (AZ.)

Yes, more than once, the guys at MRT have advised me that their headers (they call them extractors) are for high power application only. I am also a bit aprehensive about the 3" exhaust system for an otherwise stock or near stock set-up. Calculations I performed some time ago worked out to 2.25 - 2.5 inches as ideal for exhaust system diameter. I need to revisit that because I'll be looking forward to what is appropriate for my goal in the 300 HP range, and I can't remember whether my calcs was for that or not.

Please elaborate on those Borla headers. I understand they make a N/A header and have a turbo header in the works, but sounds like you jumped the gun. I have heard that the 2nd series is much improved than the 1st.

1) What diameter did Borla use?

2) Do they appear to be equal length?

3) Are they 2 into 1 into 1 or 4 into 1?

4) How was the correct length, angle, positioning, etc, of the up and down pipe determined (e.g. fabricated on the car)?

5) Did you start out with the N/A header, and have someone adapt the up and down pipe or did Borla do everything?

Curious because Borla price is the only one I've seen for Subes anywhere near my ballpark, but have heard bad things about them too.
