Josh,
I am not in the car / engine import biz myself, but here is the
situation.
- Complete cars were very cheap ex Japan in the late 80s, due to
their recertification laws forcing them to be scrapped. A 89-93 turbo
Legacy could be landed in NZ for as little as USD1500!
- With NZ being the most deregulated car market in the world, some
savvy biz people imported heaps of Jap used imports...and the price e
Japan went up with the demand. You can still get a 89-93 for USD4K
retail.
- The desirable models and manual trans are getting scare now, as the
UK is now snapping them up at the Jap auctions, and the Poms pay much
more for them in their local market.
- Wrecks and motors are still very cheap ex Japan... almost scrap
metal values.
I guess if you can source an engine ex Japan (establishing the
contacts are the hard part), it may cost as little as USD500-1000.
Freight and landing to the USA would probably cost more than the
engine! A friend of mine was considering bringing in a container load
of engines and trans, which he costed out at about USD1000 each,
landed in NZ.
Mind you... you would need all the ECU, engine sensors, etc... and
fitting into a BC-BF would be a mission. A complete wreck would
probably be better value, but the freight would esclate.

I'd love to get a WRX intercooler for my Turbo, are there any
TypeII's available (i think that's the one) for reasonable prices to
ship to the US?

Josh, sorry to say this but the twin turbo do will not fit in your car,
unless it is a Righthand drive without major modifications. The steering
column is in the way. Somebody, please prove me wrong
