So....
I tried to talk to a Subaru Tech at our local dealer today. The
manager kept me from talking to him directly so I am concerned that
my
question was interpreted / answered wrong. So I am going to present
my question to you....
Does the computer on my 93 Legacy Touring Wagon store error codes in
memory and does it generate any error codes that don't turn on the
check engine light???????
Their answer was that the 93 stores no error codes and the check
engine light must be on before computer diagnostics is useful.
Are they right???????
Thanks,
Carl

Carl, after working at a Subaru dealer and using the Select Monitor about
half a million times, I can tell you that yes, the ECU does store error
codes, although if the check engine light flashes for just a second, then
goes off right away, it may not have been on long enough for the ECU to
store it. And although it seems logical to say that the check engine light
has to come on for there to be a code in the ECU, I have found a code now
and then in my ECU, but never remember the Check Engine light coming on.
Depending on how much they charge and how close they are, it might be worth
it for them to just check it out quick. Or if you want to do it yourself, I
believe Josh has the instructions on his web site how to retrieve the codes
by yourself. His address is in the links section on the home page.

Carl, here is the link to Josh's page. Just go to the "notes and tips"
section, it's under engine tips. May be of some use to you. This enables you
to read your own codes.
