Will the 91 Factory oil cooler fits to 92?

Post by Ben Lam »

I would like to know would the 91 oil cooler will fits to a 92 turbo?
Or How about the Forester's oil cooler will fits to a 92 turbo too?
What are the advantage and disadvantage when puts those factory oil
cooler on, are they useless or better then nothing?

Ben, yes the oil cooler will fit. You will need to buy all the hoses and
things as well. Let me know if you need the part numbers. According to
Jay-UK on the i-club, the factory oil coolers are effecient enough for all
but the most intense driving( track days), judging by his oil temps I
believe. The air-to-air oil coolers are probably a bit more effecient, but
the majority of people don't drive their cars hard enough and long enough to
get any more benefit from them then the factory oil cooler can provide. But,
being that you do TSD's, an air-to-air might be of some use. Either way,
anything is better then nothing and I don't know of any disadvantages from
using an oil cooler, other then the expense to get one.

Ben: you have adequate oil cooling in your EJ22T engine. I wouldn't screw
with it, as external oil coolers carry an element of vulnerability.

Bill, I'm not disagreeing with you, but what element of vulnerability is
introduced when you install a Subaru factory oil cooler to your car?

Matt: I respect your opinion greatly and a challenge to my nonsense is
always welcome. I have no familiarity with the Subaru oil cooler, but the
oil cooler on my 78 Saab Turbo was a point of vulnerability to rock damage,
with the possibility of causing a catastrophic oil leak. Any unnecesary
fittings, lines or xposed gizmos always spook me. I love to run off-road,
jump curbs, hit driveway aprons at 70 mph etc., so I am extra sensitive to
anything that could get broke. How protected is the Subaru oil cooler?

Bill, believe me, I wasn't challenging your opinion, I respect yours a great
deal as well and it's good to have you on the list. I was just curious what
your thoughts were, that's all. Actually the Subaru oil cool connects right
to the oil pump and overall sits maybe an inch or so lower with all of the
coolant lines staying well out of reach of anything. They did a good job
with that one. BTW, get those pictures to Dave, I'm looking forward to
checking out your car as well :^) Keep those opinions coming, the more the
better!
