Sams' non turbo SS and Ryans' nipple

Post by ssspoon@aol.com »

Hey Sam, can't avoid raining on your parade a bit here but if you want the
real deal I have to bring you some words of reality. The plane Jane Legacy
Sedan and Wagons do not differ from the Sport Sedan/Touring Wagon by only an
engine. There's differences in the trans, the suspension, the brakes, the
ECU and in the case of auto trannys a separate stand alone TCU, and what
else...Oh yeah, the cooling system. That little coolant tank that shit
Ryan's' nipple has done the same thing to me. I epoxied it so heavy that I
changed my mind about a new tank, which I figure will not be as strong as the
one I patched. But the tank's just the tip of the iceberg. The radiators
bigger, and that tank is part of a system that causes water flow to continue
cooling the turbo with some kind of siphoning and vacuum action after you
shut down the engine. Bill and Matt can probably give you specifics on all
the changeouts you'll need to transform your Clark Kent into a factory spec
Superu Legacy Touring Wagon. It ain't from just putting on a red cape. And
you mentioned something about a MY 00 2.5? Please!!! Larry Witherspoon

Larry,

Don't worry about my parade - I'm just trying to put as much on it as
I can under some "realistic" pretenses as follows:

A. Does it really add performance? (whatever the upgrade is)
B. Is it gonna kill me to make the changes? (I have 2 cars but I have
a wife that will keep me in check if the car is sidelined for more
than a few days. And in reality there is a mathematical time/$$$
intersect where you either have to give up things like family etc. or
you have to give up your wallet to accomplish things in mind.)

I talked to a guy who is putting a new 2.5 in his Impreza and he says
the bolt pattern for the mounts on the tranny & frame are identical
to the 2.2 (!) for the Legacy. I was talking with him face to face
and he knows what model I drive so there was no confusion. So that
got me to thinking... "hmm... same bolt pattern...wonder how much I
can get an engine for...?" so I checked it out. Teauges has a 2000
engine he wants ~ $2500 for (I don't have the exact figure, its on my
e-mail at work). So then I get to really thinking about this - like
where can I do the work on the engine, need an engine mount to work
on it, beef up the lighting a little, look into parts like camshafts
& rods etc... So then I hit the web. I dial up SPD
http://www.spdusa.com/ b/c I think I remember they had some good beta
on this engine stuff. Sure enough Mike Shields at SPD has some killer
essays on the web about engines (and much more) and some very
realistic advice.

I came out of SPD with 3 things in mind:

1. Speed/performance is a function of $ when you get down to it. How
fast do you want to go? Great advice.

2. It sounds like the EJ20G is the machine to get if you just have to
put a beefier engine in. But there is some hope for the 2.5 if you
are willing to put some effort into working the compression to an
appropriate level.

3. I have got to talk to these guys! They really look like they know
their stuff!

Any who... I'm working on the small things first. I should be getting
my S.O.A. manuals from the fellas in the brown delivery trucks on
Tue. (Haynes is good, but up to a point). So I'll share all the beta
I get out of the manuals for y-all the next time someone gets a code
or whatever. Next weekend I get to replace ALL my belts! By the
way timing belts are EXPENSIVE if you didn't know. After that I'll
start investigating all the steps toward getting some more HP out of
it. I knew putting in the turb would be a frigging nightmare - so I'm
going to hold off on it (the turbo) and make a decision if I want to
make the upgrade to a touring wagon, or if I want to go balls out and
make a schizophrenic BF that thinks its a WRX rally car cuz there's
no point in putting in a turb if the engine is gonna get swapped
later. INPUT! I NEED INPUT! Tell me what 'cha thinks.

In the mean time I sent a e-mail to the dude in Japan about his fibre
glass hood - hope he can read it! A SOA hood with the vent is +$300 -
looks good but its steel and I'd rather put it into something that
will yeild some performance first. No matter what I have to replace
the one I have now b/c it has a crease in it at the right front
headlamp that is just obnoxious enough to tick me off but at the same
time not noticeable to most folks unless I point it out. Currently
it's covered up by a hood bra.

And I'll let you know how the engine hunt goes :o)
