Oil leaking off stearing column, what the... ???

Post by McFrosty »

So I got into my car and noticed a little pool of oil on my rubber floor mat by the gas pedal. At first I was likem whatever, probably the dude at quickie lube spilled it last week or something. When I was cleaning it up I looked up under the dash just for kicks. There was oil running down the stearing column an dripping off on to the floor!

Is this even POSSIBLE? The only thing I could even come close to reasoning was this:
1. There is an oil feed to lubricate the steering column
2. An oil line for a sensor or guage (unlikely for a stock dash, right?)

Some one please tell me I'm not insane.

Looked and felt just like engine oil to me. Slight amber color. Thats why I'm so confused. Power steering fluid maybe? I'm stumped.

Not sure about these cars. But on an old Geo metro some years back, it had a bad seal for the speedometer cable, and the transmission oil would be pumped up the cable by its movement and then leak on your foot.

When I checked again today I noticed that IT WAS in fact gear fluid. I'm thinking your right about the speedo cable at this point. Thanks.
