engine won't start.
so came home today for dinner. my car was running great. i went back out ot my car after about 2 hours and tried to start it. it started but sounded like someone shoved pieces of sand and gravel into it. it just made a terrible grinding noise. then it quit after about 20 seconds. i tried restarting it tries to start but never actually catches and fires.
so any thoughts on what this could be?

yeah it could be the timing belt. Chances are one of the idle pullies or gear bearings fried. Pull off one of the side covers and look.
Luckily these engines are non-interference.
I had the idler gear pulley go on a 91 tleg that I worked on

ok so i went to pull off the crank pulley and when i did the bolt broke off.
so i'm getting it towed tomorrow BUT i could see inside of the timing belt cover (i didn't bother pulling it off) and i could see a ball bearing on the bottom of it.
so now i'm left with two problems. i probably have a the seized pulley in there but now i'm left with a broken bolt. can that be replaced??

so the car was towed today and dan at roopair is taking a look at it.
he said what probably happened is that the previous owner did not tighten down the crank pulley well enough so it wobbled and basically destroyed itself and some other timing pulleys or whatever lol.
he has to rip out the engine to drill out the broken bolt so i'm going to have him put on a new clutch
BUT he said that the crankshaft might be ripped to shreds and he said it would be cheaper for me to buy a new engine than to have him try to fix it...

so an update:
I = Screwed lol.
the entired crankshaft has ripped apart the engine lol. it slides back and forth about 2" either way. my mechanic said it will be cheaper for him to drop in a new engine than for him to replace the damaged shaft.
that's only going to cost me $2500....
considering i paid 3K for the car sucks even more.
aaahhhhh damnit.

A good used engine should only be about $1000 + install.
Not sure what your mechanic quoted you but compared to other cars Subaru motors basically fall out of the engine bay. If you source then engine and let them R&R it you can prolly get away with a bit of change in your wallet left.

yeah the mechanic said 2500 for him to put on a new shortblock.
i'm thinking that i'll go find a used engine and drop it in myself.
grrrr these next few weeks are going to be great...
