Regarding head damages at left rear cylinder on turbo Legacy Touring
Wagon 1993. History: At 86000 miles plug blew out and dealer did an
in-
place helicoil insert and replaced plug. At 89000 head replaced due
to
crack at same location, and removed head showed helicoil was too
short
or had broken off during the repair process, causing the overheating
and subsequent crack. All plugs replaced and 90000 service done at
that time.
At 120000 every part of cooling system failed and car went hot very
briefly before shut-down. Heater core, radiator and water pump all
had
leaks and all were replaced. Car compression tested 145 all cylinders
(165 all cylinders typical when new).
At 127000 all plugs replaced and same left rear plug came out with
aluminum adhered to bottom (innermost) 4-5 turns over portion of its
circumference. New plug inserted and mechanic heard gas leaking
during
running with stethoscope and then chased the hole and reinserted
plug,
now leak any more.
Concern is that this is the beginning of the same sequence of events.
I
did find out that the dealer does not apply antiseize when replacing
plugs and every mechanic in town (I talked with 5) say they do on all
aluminum heads. Any inputs and suggestions of what to look for as the
cause most appreciated. One possibility: how can I tell if the
antiknock sensor might be not doing its thing. Also does the
antiseize
have something to do with this? etc. Email replies also appreciated
at
least alerting me to your post. Thanks. (sdurkin@tsoft.com)
