Second Cat?

Second Cat?
Is my 92 Legacy Sport Sedan supposed to have a second catalytic
converter? When I had a muffler shop do my 3" exhaust, I asked if that
was a cat or just a resonator. He said it was just a resonator so I had
him cut it off and throw it away. On a similar note, I met a guy who had
a Legacy Turbo and when his front cat went bad, he just carefully cut
off the Subaru brand tin heat shielding, replaced the downpipe and cat
with two 90 degree 3" mandrel bends (joint goes in the middle where cat
used to be) and welded the heat shielding back on. He finished the job
with header tape and it looked OEM. To my eye, it looked like a stock
Subaru cat with header tape on it. I was shocked when he told me what
he had done, but I had to admit that his car was quite fast.

And his car is quite illegal if used on the street. Totally irresponsible
behavior. I personally value my environment and you should to. Leaving off
the "cat" violates Federal Law and damages the environment. Period.

Bill,
First, thanks for letting me know about this group. I had hoped
us early Legacy folk could get together and create a presence that
aftermarket manufacturers might listen too. As far as your cat
question, my '91 HAD two, I beat the material out of the second one
in my continuing efforts for cheap horsepower. I may be destined for
hell now for my flagrant disregard for the environment;)

Second Cat?
To all-my `92 N/A 2.2 has 2 cats from a `98 Impreza (necessary because of
the 90-degree route from the Borla collector) & is now running through a 2"
system. I`m contemplating a 21/2" system but I`ve heard of several people
running a 3" system with a N/A motor-I`d like to hear what everyone thinks.
The changes I`ve made so far have helped tremendously & am looking forward
to another upgrade; I just want to make the right decision. To the person
that responded to my Q about a certain cyl being down on pressure, I
appreciate your response & am going to fluoroscope that cyl for cracks later
this week-if it`s ok (regarding any cracks in the head), I plan to pull both
heads, mill them approx .0040", late 140-horse cams & followers & go from
there. The possible lower cyl pressure could be due to worn cam lobe(s) or
followers-we`ll see! ROD
