Question? Crankshaft / Woodruff Key Issues

Post by Straydog59 »

I have a chance to get a nice 91 2wd 4eat wagon real cheap. Unforunately, the drivebelt pulley ate the woodruff key slot on the end of the crankshaft (the pulley keyway and pulley is history also of course). I can get a new drive pulley and crank gear and key cheap, but is there any way to repair the slot on the crank without pulling the motor and/or removing the crank. Can yo weld a some metal via heliarc on the crank and then mill out the slot so it is tight. How hard is it to pull a crank. can it be done with the engine in the car? Thanks

I'll direct you to my story and consequent fix - http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... highlight=

Short answer, yes something can be done without pulling the crank and replacing it.

You cant pull the crank with the engine still in the car, to get the crank out you have to seperate the block halves

the keyway on my n/a busted, so i jb welded it . put it all back together. the JB weld held for about 2 weeks and then the key turned and so did my pulley. so its wabbly. But that was 4 years ago. and i havent touched it since. watching it wabble is kinda funny. But still no problems with a front bearing or oil pump. its just not worth the time for me to pull the crank
