Question, I can get an auto tranny from a 92 Legacy with ~34k miles on
it. Seeing mine has a hell of alot more 142k this would be alot cheaper
then rebuild or a 5spd swap. Is there anything I should know about? Is
there any differences between the 92 and 90 in tranny design? Or any
other advice or suggestions?
Thanks
Josh

I'd go for it if you can get it installed very cheaply. As far as i
know, the 90-94 should be very similar. if anything, the 92 might
have some subtle improvements but i really couldn't be certain.
A 5-spd swap would be ideal, but i'm sure you're going to be more
than pleased with a functional low-mileage automatic in comparison to
your well worn slime-box.

Thanks for the comments Dave. I was/am planning or going to try to do
the install myself. I've got a call into my mom's friend who owns a
transmission shop. Too bad he's in WA. So I want to see what he
thinks, and then probably go from there. And ya I know the 5spd swap
would definitely be ideal. But for the money, and right now...being in
school.....I can't turn this up...especially if I do the install myself.
I'm looking probably about $300 after shipping and any new gaskets,
filters, etc. The 5spd may still happen, it just doesn't look too
promising in the near future....I need to get a job and pay off some
student loans...lets see student loans or 5spd...hmmmmm

Hi Josh-from personal experience: the JATCO 4EAT trannys from `92 had a
problem internally that would show up at about 100k, necessitating a
complete rebuild (but not all of them!) When I had mine done by a Subie
dealer, it came with all the newest upgrades & proms that were available. If
it`s possible $-wise, before you do your install, check with the local
dealer & see what those upgrades are & include them-it makes a major
difference in performance & longevity. If you choose not to, you are
probably still OK. As for the difference between 90 & 92, I don`t know. If
it helps, I ordered a wiring/electrical manual from a dealer for my 92 & he
sent a 90 book (which worked BTW).Hope this helps-ROD
