Legacy GT

Post by Carl Andersen »

I know this isn't a BC-BF question but I will ask for input any way.
I stopped by the local Sub dealer yesterday and he had on his lot a 97
Legacy GT 2.5 sedan with 102k miles on it.

The car drove very well on the interstate but seemed to lug at 2500
rpm and seemed slugish. The book says it has 165 hp which would be
the same as my 93 Touring "turbo" wagon but it sure didn't have the
same "snap".

What are your impressions of the newer Legacys?

To get a newer model for my wife do I need to give up the performance
I enjoy in the turbo model?

Oh, I am not replacing the turbo but the 91 "Trusty Rusty".

Thanks all,

Carl of Omaha

The horsepower numbers are the same, but the Turbo has about a 15lb-ft
torque advantage over the GT (180 vs 165). That's what really gives you the
'snap.'

Turbo = Torque!

The turbo also had max Torque at ~2800RPM instead of 4500-5500. Max
horsepower was a bit lower in the rev range as well.

Turbos are much nicer to drive around town IMO.

>From what I understand, and if I am wrong will anybody
please inform me, the 2.5 gt has 5 more horsepower
than out lovely turbos but horsepower is only good in
the high rev range (usually above 4000 rpm or so). In
the low rev range what you want is torque and if my
memory serves me correctly the 2.5 gt has 160 ft/lbs
of torque peaking somewhere around 3200 rpm. The turbo
on the other hand has 180 ft/lbs of torque at around
2800 rpm. The torque is what provides the onslaught of
accelleration and force that puts you in your seat.

Hi there, I'm from England and I have a question, if anyone can help....
I have a 94 2Ltr DOHC turbo sedan.(200bhp model)
When warming up, and the temp guage is halfway to its normal operating temp. The "check engine"
lamp comes on for about 20 seconds then goes out again. It just seems a little odd that it only
does it at this one point in the warm up cycle
and never at any other time!!!!! comments please!

Also can you get an impreza sized bonet
vent to fit the Legacy bonnet?
as the gen Impreza ones I have seen fit a larger
cut out in the bonnet.
Many thanks
Ralph

It sounds like your coolant temperature sensor might be faltering, or
one of the O2 sensors could be going out.

The only way to tell for sure is to pony up the $$$ and have the
codes pulled.

Thanks all for your input. It did indeed seem the GT had lots of get up
and go after you got the RPMs up over 4000. Not exactly the range I
like for city driveing.

Guess I will see if I can find her a nice used Outback...... And I will
take over the Turbo.

Thanks for the tips but i'm a bit short of cash at the moment...and my local
dealer charges over £70per hour ($90) anyway it's soon Christmas i like
flasing lights. Back to the piont in hand someone
told me though that under the stering colom ther
is a link wire and if you
disconect it, it will fash fault codes at you via
the"check engine" light is this correct,or has someone been pulling my
chain?
The only way to tell for sure is to pony up the $$$ and have the
codes pulled.
