Guys,
I read somewhere that Imprezas have a resonator box in the air intake
system, located somewhere under the wing. It's there to quieten down
the induction roar. Does anyone know if we have one on our cars as
well? I understood that by removing this box (supposed to be quite
easy to do on the Impreza), the induction sound is improved quite a
lot... Here's a couple of comments from ScoobyNet Bulletin Board:
- quote-
"MRT recommend removing the resonator box which is set within the
wing, feeding the standard airbox. In their view it releases nearly
as much power as going to a full induction kit. You will need to
remove the inner wing under the wheel arch to remove it - which is a
relatively easy job to do."
"It takes about 45-60 mins and is a little fiddly but not difficult.
To actually get it out you will need to remove the small crossmember
between the inner wing and the spoiler valence. Don't forget to
replace it once the box is out."
"If you want induction noise with a panel filter, you need to remove
the resonator in the right-hand wing (driver's side for RHD). Air
flows from the front of the engine bay, through the wing to a
plastic "bladder" and then from there to the airbox.
If you remove the resonator and replace it with some tubing,
induction noise will increase. If you install a funnel and pipe
directly from the front of the car, you will get increased air flow.
To get to the resonator, you need to unclip the plastic liner at the
front of the right-hand (RHD driver's side) wheel arch and move
forward."
- unquote-
It's of course easy to find out if there is one just by slightly
loosening the inner wing, but if someone already knows that there is
no resonator on the Legacy then...

Resonator removal !!!???
Yes we have them.
yes it will make your car breath easier, and add induction noise
drilling the lower part of the filter box (with 1.5 or 2 inch holes) will make for even easier breathing and more noise, but then you will start using hotter air coming from under the engine hood

HI Miguelito-on my `92 legacy, I removed the pass side frt wheel well liner
& took the `water separator/resonator` off the intake to the stock air box;
then i bolted the liner back in & have enjoyed the increased airflow/sound
since then (I also have the K&N filtercharger). No problems with dirt or
anything else since doing this-give it a try! -ROD

Resonator removal !!!???
Hi
Can I jump in on this aswell.....oh! ok thanks
By airflow noise do you mean 1) deep throaty sucking engine noises like "wuuuuuuuuuwww" or 2) turbo whooshing noise like "sheeeeeeeah" ? because choice 1 would become annoying at low revs but choice 2 would be kewl at any revs..... get the idea
)
Do I sound like a nutter or what
but don't worry my medication is served in 2 hours.
cheers

Resonator removal !!!???
John,
You get both noises... more of 1) intake noise with the "accumulator / bottle" removal. Fit a snorkel intake / pod filter and you get more of 2) turbo compressor noise.
Nutter? ...well... it is all a matter of individual preferences... I personally like my engine / car quiet! No intake noise, nor exhaust drone to enter the driver cabin... on my twin, I just have to put up with the the turbo whistle from the primary (boost is always available on your throttle), but I have grown to like the "controlled explosion" of the engine as the secondary kicks in!

HI Miguelito-on my `92 legacy, I removed the pass side frt wheel well liner
& took the `water separator/resonator` off the intake to the stock air box;
then i bolted the liner back in & have enjoyed the increased airflow/sound
since then (I also have the K&N filtercharger). No problems with dirt or
anything else since doing this-give it a try! -ROD

Do I sound like a nutter or what
