Engine Oil Leak... really bad

Post by steven_esworthy »

Well, I finally got my EJ22T swap running pretty good, but now the engine has developed a HUGE oil leak. I dont think I have ever seen one quite this bad. Here is a pic that probably wont help much
Image
When I swapped the engine I degreased and cleaned all of that. I would say that if I drove the car for about 10 minutes I would loose about a quart of oil. I have replaced the turbo oil feed line because it was leaking but it did not solve this. It is coming from somewhere around the back of the engine... I wouldnt think that a rear main could leak this bad... Any help is appreciated.

Took a close look at the oil return... doesnt look like it is leaking, if the rear main or that plastic cover on the back of the engine were leaking is it possible that it could leak this much? I really need this fixed cuz Im driving to denver next week. Thanks

I replaced the return line while the engine was out. It looks dry but I guess it could be seeping. After I run the engine it leaks for about 10 minutes afterwards, I dont know if it is risidual but it seems to keep leaking until the oil cools. I will put it up on jacks tomorrow and start it so I can try to see where this friggin leak is coming from. Where is the best/fastest place I could get a rear main and the rear seperator plate? There is no subie dealer here....

is it a SOHC? because if it is that damn rear cam seal can harden up and crack, then start leaking like a biznatch. if not then that rear baffel separator plate can leak like crazy. are there any salvage yards around you? you can try to get a baffel plate of a motor there and the rear main seal if it is leaking go to any parts store see if they have it if not then have them order it.

There are salvage yard but very very limited subarus. I live in a very small town in TX... It is SOHC, I will take a quick peak at the rear cam seals. I know that NAPA can get me the rear main seal, but if Im replacing it, I would like to get a metal baffle plate, anyone know where I can get one? Thanks

I started pulling the transmission as it seems to be coming from the back of the engine. Ive got a rear main on order and hopefully the baffle plate is not damaged cuz that will take a while to get. I pulled the dipstick on my front differential(I have an AT tranny) and there was not fluid on the stick! Hopefully my trans isnt blown.

It seems people get rear main, and "rear inspection cover" mixed up. The main seal is the one around the crankshaft, the inspection cover is the little plastic, (sometimes steel) cover about halfway up the block.
Kickin' it old-school.

Ive ordered the rear main(crankshaft) seal. I know that the inspection or baffle plate can also leak. Hopefully it will just be the rear main, I should know by the end of the day when the tranny is out!

WTF!!!!

Post by steven_esworthy »

Ok, got the tranny down. Heres a pic of the back of the engine
Image

WTF happened? It looks like the flexplate tore the crap out of the baffle cover and whatever is on the other side? It was leaking out of here for sure... what should I do with this?

BTW, the seal is almost non existant, it was torn to crap. Here is a pic of the flexplate
Image

There is also a spacer for the flexplate, is it supposed to go on the crank side of the flexplate or the TC side? It was already on the engine when I got it facing the TC...

Check to see if you have back and forth movement on your crank. Your thrust bearings may be shot.
