coolant temp sensor should (in US spec models, i dunno about overseas) be on
the passenger side of the engine, somewhat under the intake manifold, tapped
into the cooland duct that lies underneith. I'd show you a picture if i had
one, really easy to find, difficult to take out.

I believe the temp sensor is next to or near the engine stamping on the pass side.

On the EJ22 turbo, it's on the driver side, much easier to access
than if it were on the pass in this instance.
Regardless, it SHOULD be on the back of the engine, near the intake
manifold. It's an 18mm part here, deep socket recommended, and is
very cheap.
The Idle air control valve might be sticking and it'll probably need
to be replaced. I'm sure it's not nearly as inexpensive as the CTS.

Ralph-I just replaced my air control valve recently based on the same code
(24). Initially, I tried to clean the carbon from same hoping it would help,
but to no avail. It ran $265 US (it was a deal from my local Subie parts
supplier). Facing the motor from the front, it`s to the left of the throttle
body & has coolant lines running to it plus a plug. After replacement, the
check engine light went away & the idle was no longer a problem. Hope this
helps-ROD
