Not sure if this question has been asked before but does anyone know
what the stock boost is on a Legacy 2.2 turbo '91 vintage? Also for
anyone that runs a aftermarket boost controller what is max boost
with a stock motor?

The stock boost is 8.7psi and the max boost to the boost cut by the
ECU is 12.5psi.
I'm using Apex-i Super AVC-R for my boost control and I run near
12psi in Higher output and 10psi on lower output.
Also I have WRX top mount intercooler, so you better have an
intercooler before doing any boost , it will safe your engine for
high pressure boost!

my 1992 Liberty turbo runs 16psi. keep in mind it does have an air/water
intercooler fitted.
from all advice i could obtain i was told 17psi was tops for reliabilty and
everyday use.

Rod,

I'm running my turbo on 'bout 17-18psi under normal conditions, but
right now we have a temperature of around -5 degrees here in Finland,
and that raises the boost quite a lot. Currently I have it cut at
around 20psi, but it sometimes reaches the limit quite fast, so I
guess it could go quite high without the cut.
Last month when I had the car dyno-tested, the guys said that a
1.4bar/20psi boost is somewhat the max boost they recommend. They
said that there's enough fuel to cope with that boost, but if it goes
beyond that mark, they guaranteed nothing...
I'm not encouraging anyone to raise their boost this high, have to
admit that it scares me sometimes (especially when I have 245000km on
my car), but I just wanted to let you all know that at least with the
performance chip I have (Superchips) the car works fine even with a
boost up to 20psi.

regards Miki

Carl,

i live in Sipoo, Finland (Europe), and yes I have an intercooler. My
Legacy is the European version of the RS Turbo, here called 200 Turbo
with 200hp as stock, i.e. 20hp less than the RS. Mine has currently
got 261HP though... ;D

cheers,

Miki

Miguelito said about his 20psi boost:

have to
admit that it scares me sometimes (especially when I have 245000km on
my car),

245000km thats 153000 miles that is so funny I nearly split my sides, I always thought you had a low mileage car so always thought thats why your engine didn't explode, have you had a new turbo fitted or is that an original aswell at 20psi it must be spinning faster then a Texan in a tornado.

How did u stop the boost cut from cutting in ?

and I felt guilty giving my car 10.5 psi because it has 143000 miles on the clock and there's you with 20 psi LOL

Boost level

Howdy John!

I still have the original turbo, never touched the darn thing (so
far)... I was, however, lucky to buy the car from the second owner,
who practically had owned it from the start. I know for sure that it
has been driven very carefully throughout the years (e.g. he swore he
never raised the rounds above 6000!), and e.g. oilchanges have been
made very every 5000kms. I therefore like to think that it's in
pretty good condition, despite the high mileage...
The boost cut can be controlled by adding a "bleed valve" to the map
sensor (at least I think it's the map sensor), we had a discussion
regarding this 'bout a month or two ago if you remember... e.g. topic
#1047.

cheers,

Miki

PS. the pic of the little swiss' car you received only half of, it's
the same I sent you in the zip file a couple of days ago
