The stock muffler on my '93 Turbo Wagon has just about had it and I was
wondering about replacing it with one that increases horsepower without
adding that horrible Honda farting noise that comes out of those ever
popular "sewer pipe" things that I see everywhere. Does anyone have any
experience to relate? Thanks-

Hi-just put a Dynomax 2.25" bullet-type muffler on 2 weeks ago. It`s
straight through & has a nice throaty sound that`s not too intrusive-no
worse than the sound of a good set of grippy tires-hope this helps-ROD (from
Az.)

My experience is that even running no muffler at all( with the rest
of the exhaust being stock), I noticed very little, if any, power
gains. The exhaust has to worry about going through the other brick
walls first before it worries about going through a free-flow
muffler. Others may have different experiences, but if you are
looking for power, I'd go for more then the muffler. But since your
muffler is on it's way out anyway, going with a free-flow muffler now
will save some money if and when you get the rest of the system done.
As for the "farting" noise, any free'er flowing muffler will increase
the chance of that happening. Hell, some of the brand new Subarus do
it! But since you are keeping the cats and resonator on it, it
shouldn't be much of a problem as they will absorb a ton of sound to
begin with.
The Apex-i RS muffler is said to be rather quiet and it's offered in
a universal type so it will fit the Legacy, you'll just need to have
it welded up to the stock exhaust.

Hi Matt
i was just reading your post and you said this;
But since you are keeping the cats and resonator on it, it
shouldn't be much of a problem as they will absorb a ton of sound to
begin with.
i was looking under my car, 91 turbo sedan, and i can't find a resonator, i have a stock exhaust system, i thought;)
what i do have is a muffler at the far end and two cats, the first one is smaller and in the middle is a larger cat.soNamed according to Hyanes
or is what i think of a the larger cat is really a resonator ? If so then i could lose the resonator, (i would feel guilty if I took off a cat).
o r do i just have it all wrong lol

Hi-should be 2 cats {primary & secondary}-no resonators on my `92 NA either-P.S.-the new WRX has 3 cats to meet EPA specs-should be interesting to modify the exhaust on THAT system! ROD (somewhere in No. AZ.)

Thanks Matt- Looking around the Web I have found a comany called
bcsports (bcsports.net) that offers custom made pipes and mufflers for
Subies- they claim a performance increase. Also Stromung makes some,
but I'm not sure they're for my car. Anyway, a stock muffler from the
dealer is $220 and these guys are asking around $400 for their gizmos
and if there's no gain (except knowing you have a nice-looking muffler
under your car) why bother?

Not that it is a lot of help, but I can buy a complete quality 2.5 inch
performance downpipe, front pipe and muffler assembly, and rear pipe and
muffler assembly for NZD 500 (USD 225)... but that's over here, and you're
over there...

Whats the dim. on those pipes? I couldn't go to that site its looks
like a gambling site. Are there $400 Cad for the whole system?
I'm interest it since if I have to custom made it I think it will
cost me about $600 -$800 from downpipe to muffler!!!
