In world markets the EJ20 was avalible with a carbed intake manifold, BUT it didnt use a distributor, it still used a computer controlled ignition system

So it still used an 02 sensor, but that had nothing to do with fuel metering?
Kickin' it old-school.

Carb question

Post by Bug-a-natic »

Hey Gang,
I heard of a method of converting a distributor unto the EJ20 engine. I even heard of using a ford escort distributor. Anybody have any methods? Pls do share!

!! Why on earth would you want to convert to a distributor? I can see carbs for the throttle response (2 dual-choke Webers with velocity stacks coming through the hood would be sweet), but I can't see any advantage to losing intelligent ignition. That'd be like throwing wood-spoke wheels on.

Go ask this question on USMB. The EA engined people who have done Ej series conversions know exactly what's required. I have had it explained to me in the past, but don't know all the details.

Steve,
Someone may want to do this to avoid wiring on a car that ran a distributor to start with, like a Beetle, or an old GL. It keeps is simple and mechanical without a bunch of wiring...

Ah, I was stupidly assuming some kind of modern swap. I'd still go through the effort to use the electronic ignition, but I personally hate distributors. I don't care if I had an old Bugatti - I'd convert it to EI (unless I had to permanently modify the car to do it).
