Hey all, can anyone recomend a muffler for my US spec Legacy Turbo.I
am running a straight through 2.25" I.D. exhaust from the turbo
back, and I am finally getting around to replacing the stock muffler.I
dont want to much noise, but a little louder than stock would be
acceptable. This car is a daily driver so a loud exhaust would be to
annoying for me. BillC

muffler that won't too lound with the 3" system, please help people!

I have a 3 inch system from the cat back it is a Fujitsubo comlpete cat back
system with resonator and the muffelr on this system is mostly quiet. Just
the right amount of noise as this is a daily driver for me. I am not sure
what it will sound like with my new downpipe which is going be 3" now from
the turbo.

Yes, 2.25 is the stock dim.The downpipe that I bought was 2.25 so I decided
to just go 2.25 all the way back.It was cheaper! I am sure that 2.5" or 3"
would be better, but what I have is better than stock. I still could use a
recomendation on the muffler. I have heard some guys like the Dynomax bullet
muffler. The price sure is right, but it looks as if it might be kind of
loud. Does anyone have one of these? BillC

Rod,
I was curious to know if your setup has increased your power (horsepower at the wheels) and if so by how much? Have you ever had it dyno tested? I was thinking about slightly modifying my N/A Legacy.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul-I`ll give you a run-down of what I`ve done that has made a tremendous difference (no dyno test yet-just seat-of-the-pants knowledge of what works). Here goes: Borla headers, `98 Impreza cats, 2.25" exhaust system w/Dynomax bullet muffler, Unorthodox crank pulley, late RS 2.5 coil pack, 8mm NGK wires, JC Sports torque chip (piggyback), Thermotec wraps on all primary header tubes, Denso Iridium plugs, K&N Filtercharger In stock air filter box with water separator removed. Very noticeable improvement; parts are on the way to upgrade my suspension. BTW, I have 149k on the car & it handles all the changes beautifully; it`s worth it if you`re a Subie nut like me. Post me back w/your fellings pls.-ROD (somewhere in No. Az.)

Mufflers
Rod,
Sounds like you have done quite a bit to increase performance without sacrificing reliability-that sounds like the path I would follow. The mods I have done to mine so far include: K&N Filtercharger in stock box (just like you have done, however, I am curious as to the removal of the water separator-does it facilitate greater airflow?), 8mm Borg-Warner wires, Bosch Platinum +4 Plugs, 15" Subaru 5-star Alloys with Dunlop D60 A2's (a big difference in the handling-although I have the 14" steel wheels with BF Goodrich M+S on now for the winter). The only other mod I have done is the changeout of the factory stereo system to a Pioneer CD head unit and 6.5" 3-ways all around. I also have noticed a significant increase in performance over stock, although when I bought my Legacy, it did need a tune-up.
The factory rear shocks have reached the end of their useful life (at 118,500 miles), so I will be replacing/upgrading those soon. However, I am more of an engine guy than a suspension guy, so I will probably be asking around about these in the near future.
Every now and then I toy with the idea of extensively modifying my Legacy, ideas ranging from bolting up a 3.3L from the SVX (I am pretty sure it will fit in our engine bay-but it would probably eat my clutch for lunch) to bolting on an aftermarket turbocharger (however, I would worry about reliability issues with that mod). However, at this point in my life I do not have the facilities to do this (I live in a townhouse community that discourages do-it-yourself maintenance). But the idea of a car being a wolf in sheep's clothing intrigues me. Also, this car is great, by far the best I have ever had. I am going to keep it until it dies (which will probably be a long, long time).
Like some of the others on this board, I too may get bitten by the WRX bug, but it would have to really impress me. I have driven a 2001 Impreza Outback Sport (with the 142bhp 2.2L) and I came to the conclusion that personally, I think my '92 Legacy is a better car (it is definitely faster and has less wind noise past 70 mph). I would probably piss alot of people off on some of the other Subaru boards if I mentioned that, but hey, it's my personal opinion.
Thanks for your response-I now have some ideas on how to squeeze more performance out of my N/A 2.2L. By the way, what did Subaru do to increase the bhp from 130 to 142? I have become a Subaru fan (before I bought my Legacy I did not know much about them). I just wish that they (Subaru and other Japanese manufacturers) would market their more performance oriented cars to the States (WRX, Legacy B4) instead of focusing primarily on Outbacks, Foresters, & other SUVs, but I guess that is what most of the American Public is buying now.

Az.)

I was curious to know if your setup has increased your power (horsepower at the wheels) and if so by how much? Have you ever had it dyno tested? I was thinking about slightly modifying my N/A Legacy.
Thanks,

Mufflers
Paul-a couple more notes: removing the water separator will increase HP by bringing in colder air from the fender well as opposed to underhood temperatures-sound under full throttle is OK , too! N2O or turbocharging requires alot of engine prep for reliability due to increased stresses. It can get very pricey. I`ve heard stuffing the SVX motor in our 4 cyl. engine bays is futile at best-no room. My struts have 149k on them & feel as good as new. I won`t be changing them `till my brake & suspension upgrades are completed. Most in the know are recommending the KYB struts (adj. & non-adj.). From the best techs i know, stick with Denso or NGK plugs, as they were designed for our engines. I`m trying to find out the differences in the 142 motor, but i suspect head/cam/possible compression differences; I`ll let you know when I find out. If I`m to upgrade any more, head & cam work would be next, though it`s not cheap either. I also upgraded my stereo system & what a difference! Here`s to the possibility of 200 reliable NA horsepower! ROD-(No. Az.)
