my 92 ss died on me last friday night. It happened when i hammered in first through an intersection. At the highest point of acceleration the car shut off and i coasted to a stop. It was totaly dead, no lights in dash, no fuel pump running, But the door chime and power locks still worked. The next day i discovered a wire in the fuse panel under the hood had been burnt out. I diconnected the battery, fixed the wire and when i reconnected the battery the wire burned up immediatly. I didnt even have the keys in it. I have had the car very temporarily shut of on me like this twice before but it came right back on suddenly. I have no idea what it could be besides a bad ground. Do you guys have any advice?

was it a fusable link (probably) or just a wire? Which fuse did it go to? thats a start.

ya it was the fuseable link

well you defintaly have whats called a dead short. Take a picture if you can to get a better idea. your basically going to have to do a ton of process of elimination work. Take a good photo and lets go from there

i disconnected the alternator and the car fired rite up. Should i purchase a new one or inspect all the wires coming off the alt.??? Can an alternator short out and cause this issue?

its possible. take it to autozone and have them check it. they will for free. or just take a volt meter and see if there is continuity from the case of the alt to the posotive terminal where you connect it.
