Lubricants

Post by John King »

Is there anyone out there with any info or experience with synthetics, additives, or blends used in their Legacy's. Right now I am using a synthetic blend Castrol oil and have had good results with engine performace improvements. I also use Mavelous Mystery Oil (in the red bottle) for a little added lubrication and performance, especially in colder weather, this stuff really does a great job especially for the price and I would recommend it to anybody. I have been thinking about switching to Prolong/ Engine Resore/ Slick 50 or comparable products. Anyone have any positive results using any one of these in specific? Any information on transmition fluids?

Lubricants

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Hi to you John-I`m currently using a Valvoline synthetic blend (approx 20% syn + 80% fossil oil) & have had excellent results (153k-no oil burning @ all-27mpg on a 1500 mile trip @ 5100 ft elevation average & speeds between 75-90 mph avg on open highways-I have AWD). I`ve been using this blend for several years & have had no problems. As for additional additives-stay away from ANY that have a PFE or teflon base-not good at all per many tests by ASE subsidiares. I`ve tried others myself (Prolong & Z-Max) with no way to tell at this point what any benefits might be. The only other item I`m trying is a extended-mile supplement also from Valvoline. We`ll see down the road what happens. In addition, after hearing that the 2.2 heads are decent enough to work on, mild headwork, upgraded cam specs & a 1/2 point increase in compression to 10:1 is in order. If possible, without engine damge likely, I`ll go to a 50-75 shot Nitrous system. An increase to a total of approx 220 HP for my NA motor should be possible. I`ll post again soon-ROD (No.Az.)

Synthetic blends and pure synthetics are a good choice for any
engine, especially turbocharged, but excellent overall.

Slick 50, Z-Max and Prolong, along with the other "snake oils" should
probably be avoided, as there's really no outside proof that they do
anything at all, much less positive. Change the oil regularly and
it's hard to go wrong.

One thing i can recommend from experience is a MotorVac treatment.
They connect a machine inline with the fuel and mix your fuel with a
detergent. It basically cleans the fuel rails, injectors, intake
valves, pistons and cylinder walls, exhaust valves and whatever else
it touches on the way out.

It's MUCH more effective than a bottle of STP fuel treatment, and
there was a marked improvement in power afterwards.

Ask around for it, it's worth every penny.

Stay away from the additives. They will end up doin more harm if they have ptfe's in them, as over time the Teflon additive wears in the engine and builds up a gummy layer. As for prolong, I don't really know.....but I screwed with additives when I first got my car.....honestly I think it's just a waste of money....just stick with a good oil and you'll be good.

I did add the Lucas oil additive on every oil change and it gaves the
engine runs more smooth and less noise!! It also helps the car run
faster then just put Synt oil!!
It cost about $15Cad for 1L and you have to put in everytime when you
change your oil like if you have to put 1 bottle with 4 L of oil (our
car needs 4.8L)

Is that the Lucas oil stabiliser? Can you use it just once and then revert back to just using engine oil? Have you heard of Morey's oil stabiliser? This can be used in engine, transmission, diff, even power steering I think. Does anybody know?
