Suspension settling

Post by entirelyturbo »

I'm gonna sound like a n00b here and although it seems like I'm just post-whoring, I truly think I have something valid to discuss.

Can it take 15-18k miles for a suspension to truly settle? That's what I feel like mine did.

Just for those who don't follow my posts, I have 04 WRX springs on KYB GR2s, Whiteline steering rack bushings, new OEM parts: steering rack, front control arms and all associated bushings, crossmember. I'm running Yoko Avid H4 tires which are quickly approaching replacement (6/32" tread left).

I was impressed with the handling when I put the WRX springs, and with the steering response with the new rack and Whiteline bushings, and with the tighter, "newer-car" feeling of the new suspension components. I had everything done roughly 20k miles ago.

But I'd say within the last 3-5k miles, I've noticed a dramatic improvement in the stability of the car and the overall 'tight' feeling. It grips harder, rides better, and something else peculiar... after replacing all that stuff, I was having the weirdest clunk that would manifest itself ONLY after the car had been sitting, ONLY after I had taken a hard left-hand turn. If I got feisty on an onramp the night before and left my driveway the next morning, it would clunk hard... and not do it again until I took a hard left-hander and did the same thing. That clunk now hardly ever happens (it happened the other day, but it was MUCH quieter). I think it was the FR spring coming unsettled and then popping back into place, but I'm not sure.

Anyway, is this actually true? I swear it's not just my butt g-meter acting up, it really does feel that way.

Thoughts? Comments?

Maybe the GR2's were overdamped for the springs, and they're finally starting to wear into the area that is good for the springs. Or maybe your tires are at the point where they have worn to their sweet spot. It could be a lot of different things.
