ECUtune Update - Subaru Legacy Performance Module

Post by Legacy777 »

Got this from Michael yesterday and thought I would post. I've been chatting with him since a while back regarding setting this up, and what would be the best configuration. If he goes with our discussed configuration, it will probably be sti 550 injectors and a JECS MAF, or possibly another larger MAF that he has used for the SVX.

Here's his email:

Hello all,

I’m just firing this email out to let you know that we aren’t too far away from having performance engine management software available for the Subaru Legacy. I have acquired the ECU’s for all the model years of OBDI Legacys and designed and manufactured a memory adaptor to let me fit new software in any of the JECS ECU’s(picture attached). I’ll be able to start tuning in the first quarter 04 so before too long I’ll need to start lining up test cars to develop the tunes on.

I will also carry some high end engine parts. I have already had coated, high silicon aluminum bearings made for the SVX which include the Legacy bearings as a subset. I have mains in 4 cylinder sets and will get rod bearings packaged for 4 cylinders as well. I have a 2.2t engine which I will tear down in order to develop the pistons and valves; I’ll apply my camshaft profile to the Legacy cams as well.

So ya, it’s getting that time,

Since you specified injectors, does that mean they would be for a baseline? So using other injectors would require more tuning than if you had 550's?

Is this the equvilant to a reflash? Or will it be user tunable?

Those are questions I don't have now. When Michael and I talked previously, it sounded like he was going for a pre-tuned setup with a specific configuration.

I don't know if he intends it to be user-tunable or not.

My main question now is the fact he's using a JECS ECU. None of the JECS ECU's were for turbos. So I'm not sure if he's planning to use the Hitachi ECU for the turbos, or d/l the hitachi programing to the JECS....so we'll see I guess.

If it ends up not being user-tunable, I will probably end up getting one of the larger MAF's from him, run the 550's, and start off tuning with the PP, and go from there.

I think the orginal ask was for an off-the-shelf, affordable, Stage X, system that bolts on and takes you to X without tuning.... Similar to what you get in the Bimmer world from the Conforti chips....

Thanks again Josh for fielding this!

Yeah.....that's sort of my take on what he's trying to do. Similar to the different MAPS for cobb's accessport.

Isn't that kind of redundant? What I mean is, couldn't you scale for a larger MAF and bigger injectors with the PP or other piggyback?

This kind of seems like a general fix for a specific problem. Most of us run different setups. i.e. diff ecus on diff engines w/ non-stock heads, in some cases. I don't see that it would apply to the majority of us old school legacy fans whose cars are all unique, in most cases.

Now if free5ty1e would just finish that damn LegaECU...

Not sure I follow. Are you referring to what I will be doing? or what ECUtune is doing?

Were you saying that, if this is non-user tunable, you'd run a PP for adjustability along with this unit? Or one of his larger MAFs with only the PP?

Is there an ETA for this product and a projected cost?

If this would be a "re-flash" of sorts with this chip, and it was priced reasonably, i'd be in for it.

I am really excited for this to come out...because there are really no options for us besides piggyback or standalone...

I have a PP6 piggyback...and it works great...but i has a slight dead-spot around 8 in Hg...so I think an ecu with a higher threshold and the PP6 on top of that for some fine tuning would be a totally tits combo!

Nick, What map are you using on the PP? Or did you pay for dyno time?...

Okay. What I'm wondering now is, can't you run any MAF and scale its output w/ the PP?

Yes, you can run any MAF.

This guy also sells a MAF sensor that will more or less fit into the stock location, and all that needs to be done is the electrical connector swapped over. He said he sells these MAFs with his SVX kits.

I have yet to see one, but from talking with him over email, that's what it sounds like. I believe this MAF he's talking about is good for around 400 hp...I think.
