ticking sound under part throttle

Post by Ricky »

Hey people...

I am having this problem of a slight ticking sound under part
throttle... and that is very light part throttle, normal city
cruising at approx 60-70km/h at 4th gear..... any more throttle, that
ticking sound dissapears, and if i let it off a bit, it also
dissapears, anyone have any idea what it is? it happens under both
warm and cold engine temps, changed to NGK plug wires today, sound
stayed the same....

i changed my spark plugs 4000km ago, 15W40 oil 4000kms, using K&N
filter, and took out resonator.

Have you replaced your boost solenoid yet?

My AVC-R's actuator valve, which controls boost, makes a lot of
noise. I didn't notice my stock one clicking, but that could very
well be it.

sound like a tikkey wifter, or a sticky lifter, perhaps some sludge remover. the thin stuff you put in a cold engine, start, idle till warm (10 min) then new oil and filter. That helped my tick.

isn't your oil a little heavy. 15w40 is what i use in my VW diesel, Subies like 5w30 better, or if it's hot where you are perhaps 5w40.

Gord,
My subaru dealer recommends and uses 15W40 Diesel oil for my Liberty RS Turbo - makes less ticking noise ( I think)

Actually, this is exactly what i am using.. Agip Superguard oil,
15W40 for diesel engines.. my mechanic say it might work good for
turbo application, so i used it....

Just to add more confusion, a couple of months ago I put Motul 300V
15W50 in my Legacy RS Turbo, and it started ticking like it had never
done before. We still have a temperature around 5C degrees here in
Finland, I guess it would be better to use this grade of oil when
it's warmer...

Hmm.... maybe i should change to 5W30 next oil change to and see what
happens then...

O yeah, after really listening to the sound closely, it actually only
ticks when i apply throttle lightly to accelerate... if i just keep
my foot at same throttle position, and it accelerates to around 70
til it just cruises around there, the tick stops.. this means that it
only ticks when the engine is under load....

I'll see if it is later when i can actually get my lazy butt off the
chair and replace it. haha.. and i also need $$! :(

the reason i believe its not the solenoind is becoz my boost guage is
reading negative pressure around -15 to -21 hgm or something like
that when its lightly accelerating, which is normal i believe? i
don't think my wastegate would be doing any work under negative
pressure would it?

because if its exhaust leak it should tick all the time, under full

mine used to tick on another car I thought it was just a worn engine untill I tightened up the exhaust engine manifold and bingo no ticking :)

ticking sound under part throttle

Post by daniel.wilson@db.co.nz »

My Subaru has done the same after using ELF Synthetic 15w50 Oil, it
is the hydraulic tappets, with the Subaru hydraulic tappets it pays
to flush the oil at each oil change, to reduce this noise. The
viscosity of this oil is different than recommended, which is why the
tappets react like this. You should never use diesel oils in petrol
cars!!
