Koyo Radiator

Post by Threshld1 »

So i got sick and tired of OEM radiators leaking from cracked end tanks or rows like this:

http://oksubaru.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=6976

So for $280 shipped i picked up a Koyo from Race Inspired. As Dan (93forestpearl) said in his write up this is a direct replacement for the OEM radiator (so long as you dont have a front mount in the way :-D ). Stock fans bolt on with no problems (besides looking tacky all rusted on the 'bling bling' polished aluminum radiator) and while it is ~.75" thicker you still have .5"+ clearance between the fans and belt.
The bleeder screw makes it 10x easier to fill/bleed the system quickly also.
Got everything hooked up and ran it for 30 min while reving it now and again. I couldnt even get the radiator fans to kick on.
So far im very happy with it and would suggest it to anyone dealing with radiator problems.

Here are all the pics from the install:

You would have to ask dan to be sure but he has totally modified his radiator mounting to move it ~1" back to clear the FMIC core. So he had to get some low profile fans. Check his thread here:

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic. ... light=koyo

Also i know this has been covered a few times but i figure more pictures never hurt. I just wish i could figure out how to link direct images from my gallery into a forum as the img linking doesnt work with php links.

Looks great, but you at least owed it to yourself and the new rad to wipe down & clean the fan shrouds... *sigh* Kids these days just don't show proper respect to new parts. (j/k)

Haha well if it wasnt 45* in the shop with no ventilation i would sand down all the rust and repaint them. But its going to have to wait until spring.

Fine, then start a fire to warm up the place (don't care how, but 65* & above makes paint happy) and get to work while wearing a respirator mask.

There, problem solved you little whipper snapper...

As of December 1st, 31... :(
I know, I'm getting to be an old foggy. Most of the general public from the site seems to me early 20's. I'm at least not to the "get off my damn lawn you punk kids", but people who haul ass down my street piss me off because it's not a drag strip.

It's fogey, not foggy - foggy is San Francisco Harbor. Things will start falling off. Invest in superglue.

See, even my spelling skills are going down hill now too...

Either way, the info on the Koyo radiator has been helpful.

Geezus, 31? That's not old!!! Comon get a REAL reason for being grumpy. <grin> I got a decade on you baby and more...Some guys here are older than that. Save it for another thread. Saw one of these rads in person to day at PIA and they look amazing. Gotta save my pennies and hope that the deal keeps being so good...Cheers!

I'm thinking with school refund money in mid January I'll pick one up so I have a matching FMIC & radiator. Any idea if the N/A & the turbo Koyo models are the same size core thickness? I'm aware of the height differences.

P.S. I know 31 is not old, but the wear & tear I put on my body (soccer, skateboarding, running long distance in track, being a mechanic for 4yrs) is starting to catch up with me already.

What are you attributing the radiator failure to? What does the motor going three months later have to do with it? How did either the rad or motor fail?
