Cam Sprocket Help!
Does anyone know where I can get lightweight _Cam_ shaft sprockets? I know
there are underdrive pulleys etc. that are made of lightweight aluminum, can
anyone direct me to some similarly built cam sprockets? I'm sure they
exist... I just can't find 'um. Maybe with good reason (?)
Thanks,
-Sambo

The stock ones on an EJ20R are lightweight plastic... sort of a Bakelite
compound. DOHC of course...

Cam Sprocket Help!
I've never taken mine off. When i've seen them on mine and the
2.5RS, they appeared to be aluminum. Are you looking for an even
lighter version of this?
BPM or B-Spec might have a solution for you.

All,
_CAM SPROCKET_ = The two, big, wheelie looking things with teeth INSIDE the
timing belt cover, on each side of the engine.
Not timing belt cover itself. If the cam sprockets were lightweight plastic
I guarentee the EJ20R would be _the_ most tragically flawed engine to ever
come out of Japan.
Just for clairification, in case if anyone else was confused John, not to be
untoward.

I'm looking for a lightweight version of these, aluminum maybe? Anyone know
where I can find them?
Appologies in advance,

Cam Sprocket Help!
They could be a light weight plastic type pulley the DOHC 2.5 engine
had plastic pulleys with magnets embedded in them to actuate the cam
sensors. This is why the 2.5 engine found in a salvage yard with any
front damage most likely would have bent valves. Tt is a non
interferance engine but the valves could hit even with a belt failure.

Cam Sprocket Help!
Hmm...<Pulling foot out of mouth> So the likely hood of these sprockets
fitting an EJ22 open-deck is pretty low eh? The timing markers are probably
completely different(?).</pulling foot out of mouth> I'll have to see if I
can look at a couple side by side if I can in the next couple o' days...

Cam Sprocket Help!
Sam,
You don't state your engine but it must be SOHC if you have two sprockets.
Tragically flawed?... I don't think so!... the EJ20R is the base for Subaru
performance engines, and consistently delivers 275bhp in stock form. I bet
you the plastic sprockets are lighter and wear better than aluminum... and
this type of construction is regularly used on many Japanese engines

I am pretty sure they are different I haven't heard of a failure of
one of them other than damage.

Cam Sprocket Help!
The cam sprockets on the 2.2l engine are not aluminum they are made of
steel so I don't think wear would be much of a problem but they sure
are heavier I am going to take a look at both but I don't expect them
to interchange. One thig that is strange about the plastic pulleys is
that two of the magnets are different than the rest ??

Cam Sprocket Help!
Sam,
I have two EJ20R motors one is putting out 300bhp, and my other
460bhp, NOTE at the wheels. I am yet to see anyone talk about getting
that out of an American Legacy.
Plus you will not get any noticable gains from that modification
anyway.
