Tapping sound from engine on startup

Post by Penty »

Hi Chaps

This has been going on now for six months since I first brought my car and seems to be getting worse so I thought maybe one of you guys might be having a simililiar problem

It only happens when I have left my car standing over night or for longer then lets say 8 hours or so, but when I fire up my car it seems to make a tappet tapping type of noise, if I stop the engine let it sit for 5 secs and start it again the noise is gone but if I leave it ticking over the noise slowly subsides over 30 secs or so.......it doesn't always do this everytime I leave it standing just about 30% of the time sometimes it goes weeks without doing it.

I have changed the oil and given it a good flush through.....I'm sure it's the hydraulic tappets but what can I do if the oil flush failed?

I have one of those tapping that comes and goes. I cango weeks and not hear it or sometimes it is there for days on end. hot cold, startup afer a hard run when it is ther it stays.......until it goes suddenly for no reason that i can fathom.

i've flushed with cheap oil, engine flushes the tin stuff and the thick stuff...... i give up, i'll except the zen of the sticky lifter and be the tick.

i do wonder if it might be an indication of low oil pressure (old tired oil pump maybe?), when i get my timing belt done i think i'll try a new one and see.

Tapping sound from engine on startup

Post by daniel.wilson@db.co.nz »

If you change to Impreza heads, you will not benifit unless you
locate a set of solid lifter heads.

around 1996-1997 Impreza series 4 use small buckets - Easier to come
by, fairly expensive
around 1998-1999 Impreza series 5 use large buckets - Note very hard
to come by, and if you do very expensive

Best Option 1997-1998 Subaru Outback 2.5L heads - The easiest to
locate, and very cheap.

FYI - The 1997-1998 Subaru Outback 2.5L heads will fit on the EJ20
motors. Just put the cams from the turbo car into the Outback heads,
the inlet ports are slightly smaller so would need porting, these
heads after that will flow better than the Impreza heads. The reason
for this is that the buckets in the heads are very large solid
lifter, this will also allow you to run huge cam shafts, with more
lift and duration.
The Outback heads use over head shims, change to on valve.

Tapping sound from engine on startup

Sounds like a small bit of sludge build up in the tappets that is
moving around causing the tappet to stick like you suggest. How often
do you flush the engine, how many k/m or miles?

If it was low pressure from the pump you oil light should have come
on, and low pressure from the oil pump would cause knock knock knock
rather than tick tick tick

Tapping sound from engine on startup

Post by daniel.wilson@db.co.nz »

Yes that sound is the hydraulic tappets, one of my cars started
making that sound after I started running Synthetic oil, that is just
because of the viscosity of the oil, check that the viscosity of your
oil is what is recomended, if you are running Synthetic oil you
probably will not be able to achieve that.

The Subaru Legacies have very fussy hydraulic tappets, you should
flush the car with every oil change or every second, other wise the
sludge build up blocks or significantly reduces the size of the
little galleries.

Now that the tappets are noisy, your best bet now would be to run
another flush through after 5 thousands KM's do this for about three
changes you should then notice the sound reducing.

Daniel

Tapping sound from engine on startup

Yeah exactly what happened to my car, three flushes and all is well

Tapping sound from engine on startup

Post by Rod Grosvenor »

Daniel-I have question (not related to noisy tappets)-I`ve got some old codes in the ECU that have been addressed already (O2 sensor & IAC valve) but the codes remain after resetting the ECU several times. Without going to a Subie dealer, is there any way to remove these easily? Also, checked the timing & found it was 10 degrees retarded! I`ll unhook my JC chip & bypass the DIS-2 to see if it makes a difference. If not, the trouble-shooting book I have indicates there may be a problem somewhere if the timing is specifically off 10 degrees but a code should have been set to indicate where to go next. Any ideas? Is this retard the `limp-home` set-up I`ve heard about? ANY help would be greatly appreciated-Thanks-ROD (AZ.)

Tapping sound from engine on startup

Post by daniel.wilson@db.co.nz »

If you complete the ECU reset then, the codes appear again, you have
a problem and need to get those errors fixed. I am not sure about the
JC chips, maybe Brett will know.

That is why it pays to do it after EACH oil change, to reduce the
chances.
