Best way to clean heads for HG R&R?

Post by skid542 »

Well, I have the heads pulled. I went ahead and pulled the one that still had the good HG. Just for the sake of having it all fresh. Things were a PIA to get out but I did.

Now that they are out, I'm ready to get it all cleaned up. There is a fair bit of junk on the outside from 130k/15 yr of use. I have the valve rocker assemblies off. Does anybody have any good suggestions for cleaning these up?

I was thinking of going to one of those drive in car washes and hitting them with their degressers. Keeping the pressure washer away from the seals. Any other suggestions?

Also, what's the best way to clean the HG surface, both on the heads and on the block?

Thanks for all the input on this on going project.

Careful work with razor blades and some kind of spray lubricant, finishing up with some brake cleaner and a rag. And of course check for warpage with a steel ruler on the diagonals.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
