Pulley blew up

Post by BSOD2600 »

On my trip back to school last week, at one point I smelled burning rubber. Pulled over, checked the belts, etc and everything seemed fine. Nothing smelled burning. Odd.

Fast forward to today. Noticed a slight burning smell again. Once I had parked, I checked the belts. To my dismay, I found the belt that drives the AC was completely shredded and mostly missing. Upon further inspection, the pulley tensioner was completely broken. The pulley itself must've blown out the bearings since it doesn't even sit on the screw now.

Ordered myself up a new pulley assembly and belt from subaruparts.com for ~$80 (dealer wanted $120 and special order). Hopefully will be here in a week. Yes, I realize many of you die-hards don't have AC anymore. I find it handy for defrosting the windows and coolin' down in the "hot" Seattle summer air :P.

I know what you mean about the a/c. I would already have gotten rid of mine if I didn't live in the south.
