Wiseco pistons, all new acl race quality bearings!

Now I've got the oil pump and front and rear seals installed.

Tomorrow I'm dropping off my flywheel to get it resurfaced before I head off to class.

*yeah, I overdid the rear main seal and had to order another one. I punched it a little too far in and covered the drain hole. And from previous threads a few of us have learned the hard way of what may happen.*

I'm going to be installing a set of HD Wiseco headgaskets and equal length headers sometime in the next week.



Stuffs I've got going on my engine.

Rebuilt pinktop injectors
Rebuilt TD04 turbo
STI Urethane Mounts
ACT Clutch/Pressure Plate
Brand New Headbolts *subaru*

A few questions...

Would you guys reccomend installing the headers before or after putting the engine under the hood.

And, I'm using a HQ Anerobic Sealer,

It only said to use "Fluid packing" behind the oil pump, but my rebuild kit came with a oil pump seal. Oh and as directed, I used a torque wrench to evenly torque down the oil pump to 4.7ft/lbs... Which isn't much, are these two things correct?

The torque sounds proper, but is the sealer right?

I'd put the headers on after.

I put manifold son before dropping the motor in.


SO did you use the sealer on the back of your oil pump? THats what they mean by fluid packing. Looks good keep us posted.

I originally used the td04 response is great gut top end suffers a little. Mine would peak to about 17psi before 4 grand then taper(even with the EBC) to about 10-11 at redline

seems to me like a full header would seriously get in the way of the crossmember trying to drop the engine in with it attached.

^^ well, atleast I'm getting bunches of feedback on it. :P I'm SADLY still waiting on the dang flywheel, the machine shop is taking their sweet time, "be ready tomorrow" for the last couple weeks....

Yeah, it turns out that I didn't use "primer and activator spray" that was recommended on the back of the tube... Yup, I used it on the back of the oil pump, but it's back off and i've got a new front and rear main seal, *have to split the case and clean up the sealer shtuff, put on the activator/sealer AND THEN put on the anaerobic sealer...* I'm not taking any chances and the two seals weren't that much.

It's a bummer, I've got it all assembled in short block form and all these parts laying around smelling like new, just waiting... for me to pop it in half, and clean and reassemble... Atleast now I've got all the torques memorized and know these babies like theres no tomorrow...

Oh and I got a new ring set for the piston that had a boogered upper oil ring that was damaged when I first installed the pistons... My ring compressor failed me when I didn't have it perfectly set up that time... I really dont think I HAD to replace it, when the ring was laying on my table, it looked pretty clean, but I figured better safe than sorry.

Now that i've only two final tests for school coming up, one this friday the fourth and the next friday the eleventh, I'll have WAY more time to put into assembling this thing.

OH and the machine shop guy mentioned that he's not going to pull the pins from my flywheel and just grind them off...

I know one of them was smoothed off, I thought nothing of it, but it DID have two left, are these super important? I figured that Fuji Ind. put them there for a reason, but was it ease of assembly or strength?

I'm not so much of a trans-guy... I can take things apart and re assemble them, but damned if I dont feel confident in assembling something with fewer parts in the reassembly.. hehe

Those flywheel pins seem like there are there for lining up the bolt holes of the pressure plate, I don't know how important they really are.

Has anyone not used the flywheel pins?

A very reliable car guru friend of mine just told me that the pins are for ease and speed of assembly by the manufacturer.

nah, the weight isn't substantial enough... They just get really difficult to remove, they rust in place and arent needed for a fresh pressureplate's alignment. Few machine shops will pull them, if they dont come right out, it's not worth their time.

I'm experimenting with a 90* inlet TD04 on my GF8 EJ20G LSS right now & it spikes up 2 psi over the taper down boost with my EVC.

I have it set to spike to 18psi & taper off to 16psi right now, but with my MBC it would taper off to 10-11psi like BMX said.

lol, so that solves my question about my rods being sturdy enough...

They're stock ej22t rods, so they should handle up to 18 psi spikes...


I've gotta pull apart the my shortblock again, I finally got the "primer activator" for the anaerobic sealer...

I've got only one more Microsoft Cert Test and my new job is in the bag... So now that school is done, two tests are complete. The next one happening this next week, I've got some building to do.

Current build status... On temp-hold, but next is:

-Install my sti short shifter and urethane trans mount...
-Install my rebuilt rear brake calipers...
-Install front WRX struts *others are done...
-Install both front axles...
-Install rebuilt front calipers...

That's going to give me a full weekends worth of stuff next week.


I really hope to drop off my legacy after about a year of driving this current build. I'll upgrade to a much higher flowing sohc/dohc head set, h-beam rods and better turbo... with a full dog box, front lsd.. and some sort of suspension upgrade.. :P

Well, I did it, I bought a set of H-Beam forged rods... I hadn't gotten to the re-rebuilding after finding out I didn't use an activator/primer for the anaerobic sealer on the crank case...

I'm ready to assemble.. but now I'm waiting on my shiny new rods to come in!

It's not overbuilt to last 200,000 miles at 20 psi. In fact I bet it's spot on.

That's what I like to hear! I love this car, and after all the blood sweat and ... maybe tears. I aint saying a thing... I hope it lasts me a long time!

Also, to balance one rod that I purchase used, the machine shop did some *sanding* on the cap to match it's weight to the others.. I know it's one matches non high performance engine parts, but I figured it's better safe than sorry...


Until I come across a bit of cash, i.e. a raise or tax return, I'm going to be running it with the TD04 and stock boost controller and stock computer, so it'll be a way conservative tune, until I can get it down to axis in STL and have them throw it on the dyno and put aftermarket controllers on it. Atleast, in building it, I can say I had my fair share of hands-on.

I'd like to claim I did some/most of the building myself... Avoiding some people I know, who claim that they've built thier car to the hilt and in all truth, they bought it that way.

Way to go man!! You will have to let me know what the SCat rods look like. I am debating between the Brian Crower Econo series and some Helix right now. I guess pending my tax return.

WHo knows maybe with G.W.Bushy- poos economic stimulus we can get our cars tuned!!!! Hahi fell off the couch there...

Looks great man. I am right in there with you with the built motor...stock tune!!!

BUILD UPDATE:

1. Rebuilt and repainted Both rear brake calipers, installed them and dropped rear tires back on the concrete! YAY

2. Rebuilt and repainted driver-front caliper. Pass side is being stingy when it comes to getting pistons out.. :P I'll get it tomorrow.

3. Sand blasted the front caliper brackets/pad holders and painted them. *Ordered new front pads*

4. Pulled sponge-like trans mount off, removed stock shift linkage...

5. Removed both old front axles.

------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow:

Install driver side strut.

Pick up Brake Pads

Install STI shift likage

Install Group N Trans mounts

Reattach trans stuff

Install New front axles

Install New front pads

Rebuild pass. front caliper

Install front calipers

Install front braided steel brake lines

throw on the new drilled front rotors

Clean dust off car...

Take pictures...

wait for new h-beam rods to come in!

That'll get it back on the ground... how sweet! It's a big list, but I'm thinking I can get a good portion of it done by tomorrow night!

"sponge -like" :-D I always thought subaru used the very best Marshmallows Jet_puffed could provide for their mounts.

And an Sti shifter?!? Seriously are you gonna remember how to drive when you can actuallly find... you know gears when you try to shift. And now there is no excuse for grabbing your (female) passengers legs when going into reverse... 8)

You have you work cut out for you today but looks good. Totally in the same boat as you.. What little crap can I get out of the way.... If i get customers cars done today I just might get my sway bar on...

I've replaced the front axles...
... My front wheel bearings were fine, so I returned em and the seals were like new, so I left them in.

I did however finish swapping to the 03 wrx struts...
Installed the front braided steel brake lines...
And finished
Installed new brake pads
painting and installing front brackets
painting and rebuiling all four calipers..
Installing drilled rotors
Installing new front axles


It's finally sitting on the ground.

Now I'm just waiting on my forged h-beam rods from SCAT, they should arrive tomorrow!

If it wasn't so cold, I'd put the shortblock together tomorrow.

I've got one last test for my new job on the 8th, so I'm getting ready to get back into study mode, this upcoming weekend is going to be mostly study-sleep-study, but we'll see about getting my engine in!

Oh and the new STI mount and STI short-shift linkage is SO TIGHT!

Now my 100% complete list is down to...

-Right Rear ABS sensor replacement
-Connect light-up License plate to fog light system
-Hood Scoop built
-Top mount intercooler set up *not difficult, but it'll slow things down*
-Underbody Gravel shields
-Build and Install Engine
-Get alignment

It's getting close!
