EJ22T WITH EJ22NA BLOCK

Post by the_watts10 »

I HAVE A 1994 EJ22T WITH EJ22NA BLOCK AND ITS A BEAST WITH 11.3:1 COMPRESSION IN FULL THROTTLE, BUT DOESNT DO SO WELL WHEN THE PEDAL'S IN THE FLOOR BUT BETTER ABOUT HALF WAY OR THREE FOURTHS OF THE WAY DOWN. DO I NEED BIGGER FUEL INJECTORS BECAUSE OF THE COMPRESSION DIFFERENCE OR IS KNOCK SENSOR KEEPING THE MOTOR FROM RUNNING ITS FULL POTENTIAL. IVE HEARD BOTH THINGS COULD BE THE PROBLEM!!!

OK, first, lay off the damn caps...

I had the same experience with my car. 1/2 throttle was the same as full throttle. There was a sweet spot at about 1/3 pedal, after that, the car actually went slower. Nothing I tried changed it. I think that beyond a certain point, the Legacy Turbo ECU, sensors and injectors can't handle the air/fuel mix needed to make more power. If you want more out of it, you'll need a piggyback or standalone engine management computer that uses it's own air flow sensor, bigger injectors, fuel pump, and a couple hours of dyno tuning to set it all up.

Ok i figured that a bigger fuel pump and injectors would be needed and was wondering instead of buying a whole new ecu if a wrx mass airflow sensor would work since it plugs up correctly?

are you still running the stock turbo?

now that I've gotten rid of the bad o2 sensor, I'm much happier with the performance....

I think the ej22t ECU can go a long ways....

there's lots of guys on here with lots of experience. I am not one of them, just learning, but my set-up using the ej22t ECU seems to work pretty well... I bought it this way and just changed 1 thing so far...

ej25 NA block with ej22t crank/rods
ej25 flat top pistons
ej25 dohc heads
ej20g intake manifold, 440 injectors

vf8 turbo
'02 WRX tmic, and a TurboXS Recirc blow off valve
cone filter on the stock ej22t intake elbow.
currently ej22t stock exhaust, but that will get an upgrade soon

the 4.11 gears are nice too....

yes im still running the stock ecm and i think i just need bigger injectors . Also does the 1999 EJ25 NA injectors have more cc's than an 94 ej22t?

I think the ej22t injectors are bigger than the '99 Rs'.

The ej22t pinks are supposed to be 370 cc, not sure what the '99 rs injectors flow, but I had some 01Rs injectors flowed @ 306-309cc.

I see 15psi on your sig, what turbo are you using & how does the car run @ lower boost levels?

I'm running a EJ20G on a ej22t ecu with no issues.

If your car is detonating timing will get pulled (the same way a bad knock sensor causes the ECU to pull timing).

im running the stock turbo that came on it and weve havent ran the car on lower boost with the new block but its like when the car is cold the car with run good with no problem but when it warms up is when it starts running slow when it does run slow its like the car misses in full throttle and in about 1/3 throttle it does fine but still going to its full poteintial

so why does it run good cold but not after it warms up?

Someone here had very similar symtoms & I think they said it was the O2 sensor.
Look for a post titled bogging/missing...

If thats not it check the following -

Make sure you do not have any boost leaks (I had a similar prob to yours, but it was constant & it was a boost leak).

It sort of sounds like you may be knocking some once the car warms up & timing is getting pulled.
Hook the actuator up to the turbo directly to run 5psi & see if you still have the problem.

ok i was thinking i might have a boost leak because this mourning i drove my car about 11 miles and stop and it looked like my car was on fire with all of the smoke coming off of my turbo. why is their smoke coming off of the turbo and is the heat shield necessary ?
