Fellow Team ARG! member and autocrosser Noah Brandon splurged and got
himself a set of Sparco race seats. Just another thing to make him
faster than everyone else in STS in Utah...
I don't think he'd given much though to it, but as soon as i'd heard
he got new seats, i immediately remembered that Jason has some RS
seats in his Legacy.
These are from a 01 Silverthorne coupe, black with the checkered
surfaces. Nice cloth and in very good shape, being that they're less
than a year old and all.
Installation was, for the most part, easier than i expected. I
removed my passenger side seat first to do a test fit. Everything
lined up nearly perfect, but unfortunately my Pioneer CD Changer had
to be removed, as the RS seats have less room beneath them than my
Legacy ones. Why? I'm not sure, because they don't seem any lower.
Oh well, at least my head unit has a CD Player in it.
The most interesting part came when i found that the buckle assembly
is attached to the seat itself, and that the stock ones on my seats
wouldn't tranfer over. On the old seats, the buckle had a hole and a
pin. A bolt is set into the seat frame and a nut keeps the buckle on
while the pin keeps it straight. On the RS seats, it's the opposite,
and without a pin.
I simply went to a nut-and-bolt store and got a pair of bolts and 6
washers. A little elbow grease later, they fit as well as can be
expected.
Since the left side of my seat was in rough shape, the new seats feel
much better. I don't think i'll ever miss the height adjustability,
and i'm not sure about the lumbar support, but oh well.
I can't say for sure how much lighter they are, but i'm sure that
they're at least a few pounds on the passenger, and a few more on the
driver side.
Cool.
