The system is a two-stage sequential. The cross pipe is there to allow exhaust to reach both turbos. If the manifolds were separate the torque, horsepower, and throttle response would be worse than stock.

But it looks like the pulses would have to travel backwards. It seems more like it's there for some kind of pulse tuning.

what sealant is used when putting the block back together?

The "twist the piston for removal" trick is pure genius! Can't believe I never thought of that. You have no idea the stupid things I've done to remove pistons. hahahahaha

Yes you need to use sealant on the block.
