My MY92 Legacy RS hesitates on both light throttle pressure and WOT
when building up boost. I yesterday tried to remove the air-box just
to test if it might be cause there isn't enough air, but no, the same
goddam hesitation's still there.
Then I did the same as a week ago, I reset the ECU and now the car
pulls quite steadily again. I just suspect that the same hesitation
will return in a few days, just like it did before... any ideas,
could it be the plugs, I've done 30.000kms with them, but then, why
would they work ok after resetting the ECU? The plugs are quite
expensive, so I wouldn't like changing them before having at least an
idea the problem might be caused by them, besides, it's quite a job
to change them also.

Another thing, is it normal that the intake is slightly wet even as
far as the AFM and actual filter? I still have a stock intake setup
(even stock filter) and currently running ~1.2bar boost...

Comments appreciated !

Did you check the fault diagnosis to see if there were any intermitent
faults?
Filter wet? This could be a problem, how did this happen? Never seen
moisture in this area ever. I have the resonator box under the gaurd removed
and just a piece of 3" pvc feeding into the OEM filter box with std air
filter. The titanium tipped spark plugs should do 100,000km with out
problems. My old twin cam corolla had these, at 100,00km i replaced them,
they looked like new.
Regards, Rod.

Rod,

the moisture is coming from the engine, it's not water or such, the
filter is completely dry on the "air-side". Anyway it's wrong to
use "wet" here, the filter is not wet, it's just sort of ....
moist... perhaps not even on the filter, but there's some kinda moist
on the inside of the tube from the filter onward... don't know how to
describe it better. I'm just wondering if I should be worried the
darn thing could catch fire some sunny day, cause I'm assuming it's
fuel.

Regarding the plugs, that's what I figured as well, there shouldn't
be anything wrong with them yet, I guess the same goes with the
actual leads, since the car works fine after a ECU rest, they should
be ok as well... maybe...

I'll have to check for possible error codes if it starts hesitating
again, but there's at least no check engine light warnings so far.

Hey Miki,
I have to ask, you have changed the sparkplug wires in the last 5 years or
do right??

I replace my plugs every 16,000km, sometimes even less, because
the turbos have a nasty habit of fouling them. The hesitation you're
experiencing is most likely the knock sensor.

The sensor is detecting a small ping or knock, it retards the
timing a bit (hesitation), and the ECU decides that rather than risking
self-immolation to use a slightly retarded timing map from that point
on. Resetting the ECU puts it back in 'learning' mode, where it's full
balls-out until the next ping or knock.

Make sense?

Oops... never changed them... still going with the original ones...

Yes it makes sense, and explains why resetting the ECU cures the
problem, but just momentarily. I think I'll have to get a new sensor,
new plugs, and...hmm... better get them wires replaced also....

if the sensor was playing up, it should be stored in the fault diagnosis as
a intermitent fault, you think.....
If it is picking up 'knocking' why?....possibly bad fuel......

Can there be any other reasons for knocking than bad fuel, cause that
shouldn't be the case here... neither too low octane, I'm running
98...

The car really isn't knocking, the sensor and or the ECU is too sensitive,
so it thinks normal engine noise is an engine knock, and retards timing.

Sounds promising Mark, what wires did you replace with, original
Subaru??? Josh recommended Magnecore wires... any ideas on the cost???

Megnecore run I think $75 something like that US Dollar. They have a
lifetime guarantee on the wires. Dave has them too, and likes them.
