Which motor is better?

Heads, valves, pistons, rods, crankshaft, etc...

Which motor is better?

Post by userm5898 »

Is a 2.5 DOHC better than a 2.5 SOHC and I've heard people say the 2.2 is better all together?

The Phase II SOHC is preferred to the Phase I DOHC. It's mostly due to reliability from the weak cylinder support in the DOHC models and their propensity to have headgasket problems.

The DOHC revs higher, but the SOHC has a much better torque curve and is easier to drive.

Some EJ22 models have problems also, but they're generally considered very strong engines.

Thanks I have heard from others that the sohc produces a higher torque curve. and my 98 legacy 2.5L DOHC has head gasket problems so maybe ill swap a sohc phase II.

The 22B engine is the "best" 2.2L factory engine Subaru produced.

The EJ22 in the North American Legacy is a very, very good engine...if you replace the heads and the pistons.

I agree with you, but once you swap heads (+ intake), pistons (& rods) all that is left of the original motor is the crank & block...

...and?

If you're going to efficiently make over 300CHP you should have forged pistons. The stock rods are forged, but some lighter ones wouldn't be a bad idea. PnP the heads and intake manifold, or put on some WRX DOHC heads and you're breathing much, much better.

Not an easy conversion. Do your homework before you run out and buy a SOHC Ej25 for that car...

Do you have any Phase II SOHC motors lying around? I might need one.

Again? :( The only one I have is my built motor, and once I get the valve guide seals repaired, it's going in the wife's car. Sorry. I'll keep my ears open for one. PM me what kind of budget you are working with and more idea of what you are doing and I will see what I can do...

Once you change all of the internals + heads just about any motor can make good power, but I still think you are right & the ej22t has the most potential for a 2.2L !

A friend of mine has a '05 2.5l with a cracked piston - (AVO turbo Kit...) that he was going to get rid of once his car is swapped.
I could get details for you if you are interested.

My engine is still working fine, but it's eating or leaking coolant again. Might be the HG once more, or maybe a pinhole leak in the radiator or...

I'd be looking for something I could plop in, more or less, over something that'd need the case cracked. Thanks though.
