OOPS!!! I found the problem

Post by Snow-Attack »

so regarding to my previous post
http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?t=34919

apparently the idler gear below and to the right of the crank shaft gear looking at the front of the engine didn't like sustained high rpm lol....my bad!!! and it seazed up and and sheared off the bolt, moved over like 3" directly under the crankshaft gear, took some aluminum off the block, gouged my crank gear, and broke the plastic cover over everything :smt021 ... i think thats it lol. Has anyone had this happen to them before????

Not to that severity, but it does happen. The best way to go about fixing your problem would be to replace everything. The idler pullies, the tension pulley AND the tensioner, plus a new belt. That's just my opinion.

I worked on a 91 turbo legacy where the gear seized & shredded the timing belt

Does anyone reuse idler pullies? If they spin smooth are they ok, or is it just asking for trouble?

Yeah I've reused them. The main problem is the grease dries up over time. So if you spin them, and they feel a little dry you could try replacing them.....I read about someone using a syringe and injecting grease into the bearings, since they are sealed.

The idler gear is the main one you want to keep an eye on, because if it goes, it'll do a lot more damage and tear things up.

spin the pulley's and if there are any rough spot's, or if you spin it and it sounds like theres sand in it, replace them.
