Current situation…
Recently acquired 1991 legacy sport sedan.
When looking at the main pulley (not sure if that’s what its called) but there is a rubber surround starting to come out. Is this something that I need to worry about? If the rubber surround comes out what happens?
Can I replace this pulley with a stock size lightweight pulley? Has anyone done so? Can you lead me to the right direction on where to look or prices? Any gains from this?
Thanks
John

Main pulley... trouble soon?
I started getting a whining, belt-slipping sound on my car earlier
this year, which turned out to be the inside and outside parts of
said pulley slipping past one another.
So i just replaced the stock pulley with an Unorthodox Underdrive
pulley. Problem solved.
AC is fine, PS is fine, battery charges fine. No bad symptoms at
all, and i got new belts with it to boot. All of this stuff is
available from Cobb Tuning for just under $200.

One thing we found the hard way was that the adjustable idler pulley
should be checked when you have the belts off. This thing will come
apart when it goes bad and can go through the plastic belt housing and
chew the timing belt up. JC Sports has the lightweight pulley also
that is the route I took.

Main pulley... trouble soon?
You are going to have to try to be more specific about this pulley you are talking about:
What is it connected to? Pick from one of the following:
A. Crank shaft
B. Generator
C. Camshaft (right or left)
D. Air conditioner
E. Tensioner/idler
F. Power steering
If you can't identify any of those components answer the following:
Is the belt an inch wide, or half an inch wide?
If you answered 1 inch wide proceed with the following:
A. Right side (toothed) pulley
B. Left side (toothed) pulley
C. Middle (toothed) pulley
D. Other smooth pulley
If you answered 1/2 inch wide proceed with the following
A. Closest to the engine
B. Closest to the (front) bumper
And if none of that was discernable:
Was the belt in:
A. An enclosed, fitted plastic box
B. Exposed
Holler back and we'll give you some more info.
Belt tension should be loose enough that you can flex the cable back and fourth about 1/2 and inch when it's in place when you pull on it like it was the string to a archers bow. The FHI manuals say tension should be 7-9 mm/98 Newtons, or 0.0276 inches to 22lbs. An older, or pre-existing belt should be 9 - 11 mm/98 Newtons, or 0.354 - 0.433 inches to 22lbs.
The belts should not be showing any gatoring, fraying, excessive wear, or small cracks. All drive belts should be inspected every 30K miles, and replaced every 60K.

Main pulley... trouble soon?
not sure if this got answered or not. I put on an underdrive pulley from unorthodox. I have been happy with the results
Here is something I wrote up on the USMB
PS: if you would rather read it on the forum, here is the link http://pub1.ezboard.com/fultimatesubaru ... =153.topic
Well I did this about 3 weeks ago. I had some money burning a hole in my pocket, and wanted to give this thing a try. My biggest concern was about dimming lights at idle. I have a friend with an impreza, who's lights dim pretty bad. Turns out it's really not too noticable. I notice it cause I'm a little anal
<http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif> but normal person most likely would not notice it. I also have an Optima Yellow top battery, that may help a little. But I think the Legacy charging system may be a little more beefy then the impreza, or his alternator is poop...hehe.
First thing I did was take out the radiator fans, not too hard. Next took the belts off, the pulley tensioners on these motors are quite ingenious. Then came the second biggest pain in the ass in the project. Loosening the bolt for the main pulley and getting it off. I had noone to help me, stuck a BIG screw driver down the little access hole on the auto tranny, and tried to hold the two while not poppin my shoulder out...
<http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif> I finally get the bolt off. Then the stupid pulley wouldn't come off. I bang on the inside of it with a small hammer for a while, finally got that off, after strugglin for a while. Cleaned the shaft, of course the stock pulley slides on and off alot easier now.
The biggest pain in the ass was getting the Underdrive pulley to fit. The key way did not fit. I'm pretty sure the main thing, was that it was not tall enough. I ended up filing the key way deeper, and slightly wider so it would fit on. I got it on almost all the way, maybe a mm or 2 that I didn't just push on with my hands. Then I just cranked it down the rest of the way with the bolt. The subie mechanic I talked to recommended 110 ft/lbs of torque on that bolt, as well as lock titing the threads. Reassembled in reverse order, the belts they sent fit perfectly. They were the gates Unorthodox recommended. I got my pulley from SPO Motorsports. They had probably one of the better prices.
Now you're probably askin, so was it worth the $190. Well I've put close to 1000 miles on it in the past few weeks, to and from school a bunch of times, and up to Toronto
<http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif> .
The biggest thing I notice is an increase in fuel economy. I have gone up 4-5 mpg on average, per tank of gas, even the way I drive
<http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif> . I went from around 20-21 mpg to 25-26 mpg or more, depending on type of driving conditions, and my lead foot. I would get 100 miles to half tank, I get 130+ Again big thing to remember is with my driving habits. It also feels more peppy, pretty much through entire rpm range. Other thing I've noticed is that it likes to drive faster....Like my car LOVES 90+ mph. The engine is in it's nice torque/hp range, 3000 rpm or more, and it seems to go faster, easier....uh oh...not good for me. HAHA.
Overall if I save 5-6 mpg per tank, I'll get my money's worth eventually, so it will have paid for itself. All and all, if you got the money, and it's burnin a hole in your pocket, and you don't know what to buy, this would make a nice addition
<http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif> If you have moderate mechanicing skills, you should be able to do this mod.
Now for the pictures
