A/C Problems Update

Post by Ryan Power »

Hi all, me again. :)

Found the problem! The thermo control circuit (73071AA030) appears
to have burned out. I've got a new one on order so hopefully I'll be
back up to speed soon. What this circuit does, it measure the resistance
from the thermal probe within the A/C system, and when the system hits
0 degrees C, it's SUPPOSED to cut power to the A/C cut relay. What
mine was doing, was shorting so that it would think the system was at
0 with it really wasn't, so the system would shut off. The slight change
in car power (compressor off, idle speed change, and power input change
in the thermo IC) would cause the circuit to reactivate. $49 for a new one
from SubaruParts, $71 from the dealer, and I was quoted $93 for a used
unit from a junkyard. Guess which one I went with. :)

Also... it appears this part is ONLY on 90-91 models... does anyone know
what is in place on newer cars? I'm driving a 1990 Legacy. I wouldn't
imagine they would change the design much, as it was so simple to begin
with.
