Automatic Seatbelt in 1994 Turbo Sedan

Post by japtexas2001@yahoo.com »

Hello everybody. Just thought I would share my experiences with the
automatic seatbelt on the driver's side of my car. It went bad about
4-6 months ago. It would move a little, 3 inches maybe, but never
fully extend or retract to it's correct position. It was always
generally by the side of my head. After getting advice from Edmunds
Subaru Crew, this board, and one or two others, it looked like I had
a chance at having this covered under some sort of unspoken safety
warranty. So, armed with a case # from Subaru of America, I called my
dealer and they wanted to call SoA themselves, to "see what they
should do", then they wanted to see the car to "determine what parts
needed to be replaced, and if SoA would still agree to absorbing the
costs" (CYA, in my opinion). Finally, without much being said to me,
I got a notice that my parts were in, made an appointment and, as of
yesterday afternoon, I have a brand new seatbelt motor assembly.

I am telling you this because it's now obvious to me that, no matter
how good a relationship you have with your dealer, they still get
defensive when it comes to warranty work on a nearly 8 year old car.
And rightly so. Frankly, I'm amazed it worked. I think the contact
with SoA helped greatly. So, if yours break, start with SoA, get a
case # and contact name, and start the process. Why not?

Jim

is there a TSB or something that you used when you called SOA, or is this just a safety thing that they fix under a lifetime warranty?

Thanks

Automatic Seatbelt in 1994 Turbo Sedan

Post by japtexas2001@yahoo.com »

Not as far as I know, no TSB. I put the word out on the chat groups I
mentioned, and people started telling me that there was a pretty good
chance of getting it taken care of based on similar experiences they
had (usually in Hondas, strangely enough). So, to lend myself some
credibility with my dealer, I first emailed SoA, got a response
telling me to call my dealer and schedule an appointment to look at
it, and that they (SoA) would also call them and discuss "what they
could or couldn't do for me". They also gave me a case # in the
email. Then I kind of hit the dealer cold with the fact that "I had
been in contact with SoA, and here's what they say we need to do". I
figured that showing the dealer that I had done some homework and had
a case # might get me somewhere. Apparently they talked, and I got a
notice saying the parts were in and it got fixed. It was fairly
substantial labor, too - 2.5 hours, I think. All covered 100%. Zero $
out of my pocket.
