Hi Rod, The 2.2 Turbo Legacy is a whole different car than the 2.2 normally aspirated Legacy. There are differences in the suspension system, the braking system, the fuel system, the cooling and lubrication systems, the emission control system, the exhaust system, the manual and automatic transmissions, the auto trans control unit (TCU), the engine control unit (ECU) and even the seat shape and adjustment allowances. Did I forget anything? Oh yeah, the engine.
I assume from your question you are really interested in engine differences.
The following is from a Subaru tech friends 1991 Model Year Update Course Reference Booklet
The turbo block enjoys a closed deck vs an open deck for the N/A block. Oil jets have been added to the lower portion of the cylinder block to cool and lube the pistons. the cylinder heads have been modified and the coolant passages in the heads have been changed to match the new block design. The heads are NOT interchangeable side to side nor with the N/A engine...there are 3 holes in the right head for the turbo oil supply, oil return, and coolant return. The intake valves have been reduced to 27 mm for the turbo and the valve seat material for both the intake and exhaust valves has been changed to a harder material.
The new heads require new head gaskets with water ports repositioned to match the passages in the cylinder block (this is why I always wonder how the 2.5 swap is a no brainer bolt on !?!?) The grommet area has been increased for improved sealing. The N/A gasket has two identifying notches, the turbo gasket has three.
Lead has been removed from the crankshaft in order to make it more rigid, and the engine bearing material has been changed. The main bearing grooves have been modified so more oil is retained at the shaft. The are NOT interchangeable with N/A bearings.
The tip of the pistons are dished to modify the compression ratio. The thickness at the top of the piston has also been increased for added strength. In addition, the top of the piston is coated with graphite to increase wear resistance. The first and second piston ring lands are thicker for additional strength due to the increased combustion pressures. The top ring's width and depth have been increased in order to provide efficient cooling for the top of the piston. The top ring material has been changed to QB hard chrome for increased resistance to wear, and has been coated with molybdenum to prevent metal deposition with the piston. The piston pin length has been increased to provide additional strength.
A right side camshaft support has been added to the turbo engine in order to supply oil to the turbo and return coolant from the turbo. Oil and water separation is provided by an "O" ring. The camshaft has a new profile designed to match the characteristics of the turbo engine.
The oil pump assembly uses a wider rotor in order to provide increased pressure and volume
Fuel injectors, have been modified in order to provide additional fuel flow, and recognizable by their pink connector color.

Good info! I've got some similar stuff, somewhere on my site, but
that's the gist of the differences.

Answers to Rod's EJ22T vs EJ22 N/A ?'s
As Ray Romano`s father would say,"Holy Crap!" I had no idea there were that many differences between the two engines. My now- turboed NA engine is so much fun that I can hardly wait until a slightly modified EJ22T comes along with double the boost & all that entails. Your point about the 2.5 heads possibly fitting EITHER engine is an interesting one, also. That was to be one of the primary modifications for my other engine. I can tell you that @ 6.5 lbs. of boost + the custom exhaust & ignition systems & other necessaries, this car hauls butt! I had no idea how much fun (and improvement) this set-up would give! From what "the turbo guy" told me, the 2.2 in either form is vastly superior (except for the heads) to the 2.5 in strength & available torque. That`s why I`m staying with the 2.2. Now my friend Stuart may have something to day about this when his turboed 2.5 Impreza is done. It`s going to be fun. BTW, any of you going to the SEMA show in Vegas this year? I hope to meet some/any of the guys who have been so helpful in answering this dummies questions. If any of you NA guys have any questions as to the value of turboing your engines, please don`t hesitate to post & ask. You cannot believe the fun you`re going to have! Thanks again to ssspoon (Larry?) & the others kind enough to respond. "Rocket Rod" ---(AZ.)

Answers to Rod's EJ22T vs EJ22 N/A ?'s
Rod,
What kind of turbo did you put on your n/a 2.2? I am thinking about
building up a turbo that I can get off an older 1.8 and fitting it to my
n/a, or even purchasing a system, if resonablly priced, to save the
headaches and bloody knuckles. Also, can ANYONE confirm for sure that the
early model 2.2's where closed deck or not? If this is true it could be
good news for us 1990 Legacy owners. Is there any way of telling if a block
is open or closed without taking the intake off, specific castings? stamps?
block numbers?

I guess I can qualify as "ANYONE" and I really do not think that any
of the n/a engines were closed deck and if any were they were scooped
up quick because I have never seen one. On the idea of adding a turbo
to a n/a engine a closed deck is pretty far down the list of things
to
consider as a lot of na 2.2 and 2.5 open deck motors are on the road
with aftermarket turbos and the biggest problem I have seen is not
block related but pistons go away pretty quickly because of comp.
ratio and a few other reasons if you are not careful as to max boost
and charge temps. At the altitude I am at we also have thinner air
and
charge temps are a little higher and here the n/a
nonintercooled engines are limited to about 6-7 lbs if reliability is
considered important. Also the smaller turbos will give higher charge
temps.

J.K.-I installed a Garrett double roller bearing turbo that is an upgrade for the T3/T3 series, but I`ll have to get you the part # on Monday. It`s more than a non-roller bearing turbo but it spools up so quickly that I have more available power off idle than i did with the NA. Best decision I ever made! I`ll post Mon.---ROD (AZ.)

Al-thanks for your info; I run a maximum of 6.5 lbs. boost & am very happy with the results. I`m mostly @ 5,000 ft. + for now so I understand what you mean. This is why I`ve cooled the auto trans seperately, will be upgrading the valve body soon, will be installing a boost timing master combined with a CD ignition (MSD #6212) & will be adding an air-to-air intercooler I soon as I find the $$$! Late this year, I`m moving back to No. Calif. where cooler, denser air @ sea level should REALLY upgrade my fun. Any results from the changes I`ve made (or will make) will be posted as soon as I get some verifiable results. Thanks to all that answered & helped.---ROD (AZ.)

consider as a lot of na 2.2 and 2.5 open deck motors are on the road
with aftermarket turbos and the biggest problem I have seen is not
block related but pistons go away pretty quickly because of comp.
ratio and a few other reasons if you are not careful as to max boost
and charge temps. At the altitude I am at we also have thinner air
and
charge temps are a little higher and here the n/a
nonintercooled engines are limited to about 6-7 lbs if reliability is
considered important. Also the smaller turbos will give higher charge
temps.

Answers to Rod's EJ22T vs EJ22 N/A ?'s
rod, where do you plan to get your intercooler and do you have the
price off hand? i've been considering one myself for my 92 legacy
turbo and have been trying to price some and also trying to find one
that'll fit.

Answers to Rod's EJ22T vs EJ22 N/A ?'s
This altitude thing hurts us in more ways than one the thinner air
spends more time spinning around in the turbo than denser air to make
the same pressure. That is why I went to a air to water setup with a
european Legacy intercooler and have an extra radiator in front to
cool a bit better. The radiators are off off a Honda Goldwing MC.

Answers to Rod's EJ22T vs EJ22 N/A ?'s
Mike-I`m going to get one specifically made for my car as the non-adjustable strut bar does`nt go along the firewall, but curves over the throttle body. Actually, there`s more room for it that way. The guy who did the "plumbing" for my turbo is going to make the IC (air-to-air) for the car. I really don`t have a price as it`ll be one-of-a-kind unit. Finally, this won`t happen until I get my tranny`s valve body upgraded. The additional torque has made that a priority.---ROD (AZ.)

kind unit. Finally, this won`t happen until I get my tranny`s valve
body upgraded. The additional torque has made that a priority.---ROD
